Exclamation Flex Fan Woes

Alright, i got one for you guys.

So I got this Semi flex fan installed about a month ago.
I absolutely love it and would recomend it to anyone. This thing moves sooooooooooo much air, and the sound it makes is totally cool (kinda like a small supercharger)
Well i just removed my rats nest, AC pump, and wired my secondaries to be manually. Vast improvement in performance, and of course I wanted to show it off. So I cruise out to my buddies place, both him and his roommate own second gens.
Well I take him around the block, go to the end of the road, and flip a uey.
I launch pretty hard, and next thing you know we hear a boom, tappa, tappa, tappa, and its getting really hard to breathe.
So I get it to his house and pop the hood. To our surprise the engine bay is covered in liquid!

All I have to say is this: If you get a Flex Fan, make sure you have a battery tie down!

This is what happened. On my launch, the battery shifted back, and since I didnt have an AC pump anymore, the battery was able to slide over, and CONTACT!

Fortunatly, the fan was unharmed
Unfortunatly, I had to buy a new battery, and a tie down.

So What do you guys say, an "almost" Darwin award?

This is the part the worries me more than anything else... a battery tie down isn't a bad idea regardless of what fan you run.

i would also think about hosing off your engine or something...maybe some baking soda. its might not be acid that got all over but why take the chance. that stuff would definately do a job on your hoses and belts. just my opinion

So,,the moral of the storie is,,,keep your battery away
from your flex fan,? your battery floated over and the
fan cracked the battery ??? If thats right,, you need to replace that fan with a new one... look at it like this :
a helmet ( motorcycle ) , are good for 1 bash, then its a very good idea to replace it . same for the fan.
I use a 17' inch hayden semi flex fan, it fits inside the fan shroud.

Well i did hose down the engine compartment, no remnants of acid in there. Also, the fan seems to be just fine, no wobbling, or anything else that would make me think that its going out. I unfortunatly got an 18" flex fan, so it doesnt really fit in the shroud, just outside of it. Yet it works wonderfully.

As for the benifits of this fan, i think there is a thread on this forum about it. The thread is what really got me sold on buying one. But the gist is this. its running all the time (not like the stock clutch fan) and it increases rpm, when you increase rpm, not to mention it moves id say 3 times more air than stock. And to top it all off, it has this kick *** sound to it.

they make a clutch for flex fans, and how large of spacer
between the fan and the w/p pulley ? try a 17' inch with
a 3' inch spacer. I trip on how heavy the old fan and clutch weight about 13-15 LBs.
It's important, and better cooling if the fan is in the shroud, the oil cooler also gets air because the shroud
includes it. Mine pulls mad air through my front intake.
even pulls my pants leg from the front, kinda like a jet
engine intake. my temp goes to 1/4 and stays there all
day even with the a/c on full blast on idle. the racing fans are reverse rotation,,, so they push air,, not pull
for some reason,, the same bucks as the street fans.
go figure ,,huh ?? you ever hear the horror stories about flex fans ?? blades sticking in the ground, hoods,
fenders,people,,dangerous **** at 6000 rpm's ...
I've even called out a 3ed gen to race,i knew i would get
killed,, but wanted to see ,,,how bad,, this guy asked me, " 12a" i said "yes" he heard the fan and then said
" NO " way,whats under the hood ?? I said " stock 12a "
he said " thats ok " ,,Lol, so then i went hunting for this supra thats around here,, not yet ,, but soon..

I use the stock hold down, 2 threaded "J " hooks, and
the metal hold down itself. they can be found at the bone yards, or most any battery hold downs will fit for that matter, just match the size hold down to your size battery. easy !! and no more worries,,,,ever !!
