flattery

As I was leaving my house yesterday evening I found a note tacked on my door. "Do you want to sell your RX-7?" it read, written on the back of a business card...

I phoned the guy up to politely decline. Tuns out he had bought an SE from the dealer back in '84, and had been looking for another one recently.

Once a rotorhead, always a rotorhead...

I don't know how many times I've been offered to have it "taken off my hands".... little did they know that 1. It was in no condition to move at the moment and 2. I would sooner part with my own kidneys than with my car!

But you've gotta love the rotary bug.. once it bites, you're hooked for life!

I got the "If you ever want to sell your car, call 555-5555." note also a while back. Never called, but I filed the note in the Brown Mound folder.

Right on.

some random guy stopped at my house wanting to buy the S a few months ago. Most people say its dumb looking, so when someone wants to buy it you feel good.

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. I was changing the oil in my BerettaGT and I had the 7 parked out on the grass and it was looking sweet from the road apparently. Some dude in a Acura pulls in my driveway and gets out. He sounded like he was from Germany or something and he asked me about my car and if he could buy it for $1,000. I told him to get the **** outta here. He tried to tell me that my 7 wasn't worth more than 1,000 because it was so old. I got pissed and told him off. A car with a $4,500 dollar turbo setup isn't worth more than $1,000. I was about to kick his ***! Also, at a local gas station this punk *** kid rolls up in a minivan and asks me if he could trade me a "racing" dirt bike and 500 bucks for my 7. I didn't even answer him I just walked in and paid for my gas and left 2 wicked assed black streaks all the way down the pavement as the ****** watched in awe.

The only note I got was one offering to sell me a mint condition glass sunroof for $20. The guy had just moved into my area from Cali, and sold his car before he left, but forgot to include the sunroof and bag as it was in the garage and later found it when packing. It was never even put on the car I was told. Needles to say I bought it . Although, I have had a few at gas stations and auto parts stores ask about buying it (3 to be exact). Ive had lots of conversations with my hood open while tinkering with my carb or something, so that always makes me feel good too . I just like it when people are interested .

Most enthusiasts only respect cars that they think are better than average. In its day our 7's were far from average, but technological advancements continually close the gap. That and there are a good number of poorly kept examples driving around that drag perception down.

If your car looks good, and drives fast, you'll get some respect, but only those that have a discerning eye. Drive a car that everyone wants in their wet dreams, and everyone will pay homage. The fact is that first gens are cult classics. It takes a rotorhead to truly love'em. Third gens are the dream car.....so many that own them, like them, but don't respect their heritage, which is why there are so few 3rd gen owners that respect our cars.

Man, I'm sick of hearing 'yeah, but you drive a 1st gen' from 3rd gen owners who somehow think having the keys to an FD makes them a better person than I.

I have a 84 GSLSE with 233,XXX on the body, white and clean as heck, inside and out. Someone offered an X amount of cash for it. I told him that it would cost him more that. Now he knows how it feels to want a 7.
One thing though, don't you hate it when someone mistakes you car for an old Z.

Peace-

A lot of people mistake my car for a Porsche 944 Turbo. I like to see the looks on their faces when I tell them it's an 81 Mazda RX-7.

Those that like them.. Like 'em alot

I met a guy at the car wash the other day. He was shinin up his '68 Camero (this thing was gorgeous) - he looked over and gave me a thumbs up - we started talking about 7's and he noted that he's seeing fewer and fewer decent 1st gen's any more and how he has always liked the look of the car. This dude really new his cars - sports, muscle, exotic.. he seemed to be the type that lives and breathes cars, 24 hrs a day.

He said something else that made me stop and think....

"Like I said, there's fewer and fewer of those cars around anymore - take care of it and when it's as old as this one (points at his '68 Camero), you'll have them all takin a second look at your little car"

Comin from this guy, I was beamin' - and he was dead on with that comment.

Around my house all we have is classic and custom car clubs, the actual newest club is a Miata club, it is pretty nice but there is no RX-7 club, and the sad thing is is I see RX-7 around here all the time, so I think I shall start one, altho it may be more of a Sports Car Enthusiast Club
