Flares, flares, flares!
So here's the (semi) finished product of VW Cabriolet flares and some mild trimming mounted to my SA. Once I strip the car down for paint this winter they'll be body color, but for now I've left them the same blue that the were on the Cabrio.
The biggest trim job needed was reshaping the bottom rears to fit the contours of the lower quarter panel. Total time spent trimming and mounting was approx 3 hours. My only complaint is that the rear flares were slightly too small and don't go all the way down to the edge of the quarter panel. That said, it's not noticeable unless you're looking for it, IMHO. Anyone looking for about an inch extra to cover tires/wheels that stick out should look no further. You couldn't beat these flares at three times the price.

I dont' know the exact year of the cabrio that I took my flares from, but I'm pretty sure that up to '87 any VW cabrio should have the same or similar flares as I used.
I had to trim them a bit to fit the body contours of the RX-7, mostly in the back. Once the flares were trimmed and sat (mostly) flush with the body, I used self-tapping screws to attach the front flares to the inner fender lip. This way any holes drilled are out of sight should I wish to remove them. The rears don't fit quite as nicely as the fronts, so I made tabs out of thin sheetmetal and attached the tabs to the inner lip of the fender flares, giving me a surface that I could then screw to the inner lips of the rear wheel wells.
The result are flares that look pretty well suited to the car and are attached in such a way that no exterior bodywork had to be drilled or altered to make them fit.

And these are stock parts from the car, not aftermarket parts that were on the car when it went to the scrapper?
Excellent!
How're the side skirts installed?

Matt's flares look better in person than they do in the photos. And I just gave him an old ducktail spoiler I had kicking around to give the ole SA a more agressive look

before i paint my car i intend to glass my fenders in for a moulded look. sideskirts were just bolted in from the bottom side. its not perfect but it gets the job done. my car isint a show car so im not terribly worried about it.

It was just a coincidence that the custom flares that I ordered were too wide. So I ended up searching at the junkyard (a block away). I grabbed several flares from different cars. Paid for a set (front and rear) and left the rest at the door. Went back and forth 4 times until I got the right ones...and that happened to be the VW cabriolet fender flares.

Yup, thats my old chiquita banana sponsored RX-3. It is now tender blue. I just need to install a 1" lowering block in the rear. I may need to install my other set of 9" eps.
