Firewall/Brake help

So I am going to patch over the stock brake section on the firewall, that originally
housed the booster mount.

I have some 18g sheet steel here that I am thinking about using. I looked around
here and couldn't find a thread on our firewall thickness, but most of google says
16g should be good, so I will end up doing 16g. I will be welding a plate over the
4 holes and large center hole. Problem is, the patch will be drilled and ready to
run the rod through and mount the brake master cylinder to before I even weld it
on. I do not want this coming off! I am confident in my welding abilities to
just weld a plate on and go with it, but I don't feel secure about it, like one day
under hard braking the panel would pop off and there goes my brakes kind of
thing.

How should I go about making this secure? Would I need to weld a plate front
and behind the firewall? I could probably tack the back of the plate when I weld it
to the front from inside the car, but getting some serious bead on it would mean
tearing the dash out so I don't light anything on fire...

What are your goals here? To use a different brake booster/master, or just to beef up the stock location?

I have removed the brake booster entirely. No longer running one, and will have new brake
lines hidden from view. I just need about 4 more coat hangers to finish the rough brake line
mounts, then weld in new mounting nuts to hold them in place in the trans tunnel and frame
rails. Since the brake master has a much smaller footprint than the booster, I will need to
weld a plate in front. Thought about welding a plate from the rear, but I would have to
remove the whole dash and wiring, and fill the circle hole on the firewall, which I am sure will
crack from minor movement in the firewall.

why not weld threaded rod to your outside plate, and run an inner and outer plate. The outer plate could be welded to the firewall, but you would have the added strength of the bolted on inner plate which could be oversize.

Great idea! I actually have some threaded rod in the mystical 12x1.5 (paid $40 for), I'll go pick
up some 16G steel tomorrow and weld them up. Good thing I kept the booster gasket!

I can send you this template. Its actually a firewall from a 83 FB that I used to modify a RX-3s firewall for FB brake booster/clutch master/pedal assembly upgrade.

Thanks wacks I actually will be using the paper gasket that went between the booster and
the firewall as a template.

Checked on my rod (), it is too thick () for the hole (), so instead of drilling the holes
bigger, I will just get a smaller rod from lowes or something.
