A Few Simple Questions

Dont Make Fun -

1]] I've never found out what the hell everyone is talking aobut with offsets and allt hat related to rims. If i want to buy some rims, what "offset" values or whatever should i stay in between...... whats the min and max?

2]] I have some wierd white build up on my rims, i tried to polish it with "built polisher" cuz the guy at kraganes said it should do the trick. Instead it polished the white stuff and made it a little smooth, but did not take it off. It's extremely hard like it is diffused with the actual rim? any suggestions.... picutres dont help cuz you can't see the stuff, sorry.

3]] My bumper (the outter most part) is peeling, it has pink paint underneith? How do I fix this? just sand it smooth and repaint? Im not asure if it is paint or like a thin layer of material however, this is why i haven't touched it yet.

Thanks for taking time to respond you guys help alot.
Sorry for the newbish questions........ ok laugh a little i understand......

I will have a nice RX7 damnit! ! ! ! !

The white on the rims is the aluminum equivilent of rust, it is oxidation. There will be pitting because the aluminum has been eaten away. Depending on how deep the pits are will detemine how agressive you start in the polish process. I've been doing the aluminum wheels on my van and have had to use 320 wet/dry paper in some spots, working up to 2000 grit paper, a couple of machine polishes then Mother's for the last step. The rear wheels take me over 4 hours each to do and I will never get them as polished as they came new.

The pink on the bumper sounds like it's filler from a previous repair. Sand, prime and paint it.

the off set is the lug's pattern's spacing between studs, if that makes sense.

320 paper is sand paper, and can be used for dry or wet sanding. You can buy this at menards/lowes/home depot in the paint department. As for mothers, that is a brand of polish, sold at auto parts stores...theres other brands such as Eagle1, Meguires, and Armorall but mothers seems to be the best.

This is what a dremel (rotary) tool looks like...its a small handheld grinder/polisher.

Offset is the distance between the centerline of the wheel and the contact face on the inside of rim. The spacing of the studs has nothing to do with offset, the spacing of the studs is the bolt pattern (4x110mm, 4x114.3mm, 4X4.5", etc...)

As far as offset ranges:

...about the 2nd post down, if you search for offset.

I establish the offset/backspacing by this method.

take a 6" rim, this is 6 X 25 mm or 150 mm total width

0 offset is the midpoint or 75 mm/3" backspacing

+17 offset is 75 mm plus 17 mm towards the outside of the car, making the wheel ride further underneath the car. This would be approximately 92mm or approximately 3.75" backspacing.

Simple once you understand the method in which it is established.
