Define problem......
The FC doesnt really have an axle....its IRS.The rear suspension and drivetrain is supported in a subframe, which needs to bolt to the unibody. It also uses struts in the rear, for which there are no adequate towers to affix to,on the stock 1st gen chassis.Youll basically have to gut and rebuild most of the unibody behind the seats,so "create" the mounting points for the FC rear subframe and suspension.
Its been done(once),but its a big undertaking, and the FC rear suspension is not all that great anyways.

Installing irs in a 1st gen is major work, cutting out and reinforcing the unibody, getting everything lined square with the body so it will track correctly, etc. I have doubts that the benfits are worth all of the custom work.
Honestly, it would be much easier to upgrade the the rearend to Ford 8.8 and going with a panhard or 3-4 link setup to maintain handling and cornering characteristics. The nice thing about the Ford solid axle is there are more gear options availible and they are less than 1/2 the price of the Mazda ones.

Everyone worries about the extra weight they gain going to a Ford rearend, but that's where you want the extra weight when pushing over 350 hp. Better traction on launch and hopefully less snap oversteer if setup right. Added weight is not always a bad thing, if it's in the right place and saves on replacing parts frequently due to breakage.

Well, considering the 4X108 is a Ford pattern, you simply need to find a rear end with that pattern. I'm not sure if they came on the 8.8 rearends or not. Personally, you would be better off going with the 5X114.3/4-3/4" pattern, which is stock on some Fords and all the 5 bolt 2nd and 3rd gens. With your hp goal, you should do ReSpeeds big brake upgrade kit for the front. The 5X114.3 pcd will give you one of the most popular bolt patterns used and huge choice of aftermarket wheels.

Definitely stay with a solid rear end. The amount of work and time necessary to get the FC rear end in there wouldn't be worth it in the least. A good three or four link setup out back would be sufficient enough. The Ford 8.8 inch would be ideal for huge horsepower.
Pretty much everything Trochoid said, go with. I forgot the reason I was actually posting a reply, but just listen to Trochoid.
