FB hybrid with FC

Hey guys,

I'd like to do a full swap from a FC into my FB. I mean full full; swap turbo II but also all the stearing rack with custom tie rods and stuff to have more steering angle, all the brake systems, try to make the FC hubs fit or just modify the FB one and also might swap the entire rear end... It's a pretty long processus and I was wondering If someone already did it and what was the final result!

Thanks for your precious help!

Max

If you got a lot of pictures or anything that could help you can also send me an email

Doing anything beyond the TII swap isn't that common for the 1st gen. There is a thread if you search about a guy putting both the front and rear FC subframes in the car, but he was a pretty knoweldable guy, I think he said he's a mechanical engineer. So the entire suspension and everything else might be out of your leauge. I know a few good companies make kits that convert your car to a FC's 5 lug, and you get the big brakes with that kit.

I think once you search around on whats available for the 1st gen you might just skip the hassle and upgrade the 1st gen pieces instead of putting in all FC OEM pieces.

Good luck.

search..and come back to us with your findings, and if you have questions, then we can help you address them, were not going to do the project for you....

haha thats funny... I didnt ask you to do the project for me, I already got both cars in my driveway and hours of searching around without finding what i was looking for... That's why I asked... I was just wondering if it was rare to think about doing such a swap!

Nothing is impossible; it all depend on how far and how hard you want to push the swap

If you can tackle the install and setup of the FC engine into the FB,then you should be able to handle installing the FC front subframe and hooking up the steering. Its not an impossbile feat, but so far few people have done it.Its partly because most guys still have 1st gen engines in their cars, and the FC subframe/mounts are not compatible with the 1st gen engine.

As stated before, there are bolt on kits to put FC front brakes on the 1st gen.No issues there, just money.

The rear suspension/subframe would require serious work and precise engineering. So far, there arent any shining examples of a completed swap, just a few semi/part finished or abandoned attempts. Its not a minor thing to do,the 1st gen unibody is not setup for IRS,and doing it safely and effectively would be tough. On top of that, sorting out the 1st gens rearend problems isnt hard, and the FC IRS isnt all that great anyways.

If you HAVE to have it all FC.....then just buy an FC......or prepare for a large project and a fair amount of uncharted territory.

^Or just buy a FC and then start visiting a different section.

What I am confused about is that if you have both, why not use both? Is the FC in horrible shape or something? In all honesty, I think there are far better options to go with that doing all that swap with uncharted terrain.

However, if you do want to go that route I am really curious as to how it will turn out for you. I'm not doubting your capabilities, but with all the custom fabrication, all the money required to do the swap, and all the work it would take, I would say that chances are that yours will end up like most - incomplete.

I don't know whats so strange about it.... I bought a 91 FC just so I could gut it and put the front subframe in mine.... If you use the entire dash, the steering column is a breeze, also use the entire wiring harness, as it will be mostly plug and ply from an electrical stand point....

you will have to do the following make brackets for the ac core, heater core and fan unit I used some cheap 1/8" "L" brackets and some flat stock and they all fit in, you must cut one new hole for the AC cores lines as one of them is slightly off.

the entire front harness will now adapt over with all of its peripherals. PS, A/C etc will all work no issues.

the fornt crossmember is covered in an excellent writeup by ABEOMID on the forum.. do a search on his name.

he does not cover the steering colum issues which is why I chose to swap the entire dash, it allows you to use the stock steering column with no issues

you have to use the frame mount for the FC colum and drill two new holes to mount it into the SA/FB body other wise its simple fab work. biggest issue so far is getting a 4 wheel alighnment done to verify that I managed to center the front crossmember correctly.

you will have to chase wires for the headlight motors, windshield wipers, and tail lights but tis pretty simple its mostly just swapping the connectors as they use slightly different connectors.

also you need to use the FB's spring and spring cup, you will need to slightly mod the fb's top pillow mount to make it match the shaft diameter of the FC strut. there are a bunch of other little things, but you will probably have to ask me on a case by case basis.

after thought

Everybody kept asking me why I did the swap I did....

I wanted the following...

rack and pinion
better selection of brake components
better strut selection
a/c
P/S
13bt with no wiring issues ( I freaking hate trying to chase wireing issues)

I know that I could get all of the above + total reliability + some reasonable HP for when I hit the circuit as long as I used the entire wireing harness along with the crossmember swap.

Oh and did I say I love FB's, despise the way an FC looks like a beached pregnant whale, and the fact that anything that is easy is just like an easy women, low quality with problems afterwords. much more fun to fabricate, modify, F with curse at, sweat over and in the end... its truly my creation something I invested the time in to make unique just for me.
