When I painted my first FB, I removed them, then reinstalled. For my second FB I taped them off well, and painted. To be honest, I can't tell the difference in the finished product. The leaving-them-on way saved a lot of time.

No, actually I changed the car's color on both occasions. With the first car (with the trim removal) I painted the trim flat black. With the second, I treated the the trim with penetrol diluted with laquer thinner. It's a paint conditioner and rust inhibitor made for oil based paints. I used it for rust prevention on the underbody, and trim beautification.

I learned the trick from the truck guys on a GM forum. They use it on their stock fender flairs, they say it lasts years.

I found that if you dilute it and use it sparingly, then buff it with a dry cloth afterwards it leaves a nice black, almost flat finish. (Penetrol is clear, though) I've used it on my tire's sidewalls too. Same effect with no dust sticking to it, and it looks like you just applied tire dressing all the time. Lasts and lasts.

I blackend out all of the chrome pieces off my light blue RX-3. Sanded each one with 150 grit sandpaper, wiped clean with brake cleaner, primered it with barbq grill paint, sanded again with 200 grit, painted with low gloss black engine paint.

let it baked in the sun for 24 hours, sanded with 240 grit, wiped with brake cleaner and paint again with low gloss engine. let dry for 24 hours, wiped clean with brake cleaner and apply final coat. no chipping
