If I recall correctly, you can even get a carb from Autozone for something like $450.00

But for that price, I'd just get one of the modified carbs that SVTCobra (I think?) is building (since Sterling carbs are no longer available).

I missed the fact that you are in Ga. Man, let me tell you, you've got it made. Many, many great rotorheads in that area that I had the pleasure to meet this past spring. Autozone has a rebuilder they use but you have to give them a rebuildable core to send in first. It sounds like the mechanic said part of the carb was broken so he would need a different one to start off with.

I'm kinda curious as to how "messed up" the base of the carb is? Pictures?

I was thinking the same thing.. is he talking about the throttle body? If so I have like 3 spares I could have sold you for CHEAP.
