After starting 84 Rx7 1.1 standard engine I heard an unfamiliar sound looked under the hood and saw the pipe from manifold was red hot. It smoked a bit after shutting her off but otherwise seemed fine. Water was not hot nor was oil,pressure fine ,gauges seemd fine and are functional.Did not check tail pipes to see what was coming out at the time for fear of going up in flames but My guess is muffler is some how blocked, From rust or such. Sound familiar to anyone. Thanks, steve

Could be clogged cats, fouled plugs, improper timing. This is a relatively common issue. Check timing, replace plugs, replace cap and rotor (possibly ignition wires), check to see if catalytic converter is clogged. Check that list I just made in order.

cut the cat off or gut it. or replace it with a higher flow if you have to pass emissions.

Retarded timing/no leading ignition, or too lean a mixture.

You may be running lean. If this is a new problem, and you haven't adjusted anything, look for a vacuum leak.
