The end of a 6 months Odyssey
I have literally just worked out the last bug in an incredible concatenation of problems with my FB that lasted for the last 6 months. Damn! first, 6 months ago, the rear rotor's apex seals went, leaving me driving on 1 rotor for 4 weeks. Then a rebuilt streetported engine was dropped in, which failed a week later due to an error in assembly, leaving the car off the road for 4 weeks. Then the engine, now repaired, was dropped in again, but now the old Nikki started acting up. Another nikki was purchased and sent for a rebuilt, but following my instructions, it was jetted incorrectly, which made the car barely drivable. Then the original carb was sent to RX7Carl to turn it into a sterling carb. In the meantime the stock pump was replaced by a Carter with a Holley FPR. The Sterling carb was installed, and the car was still exhibiting fuel delivery problems at high rpms. In trying to pinpoint the problem, I connected a second gauge to the return line. Blocking the return line in that fashion gave the system enough fuel pressure to resolve the fuel delivery problem at high rpms! so the gauge was removed and a plug installed. Installing the plug is what I just did and tested the car. Redline to 1st, no problem, redline to 2nd, no problem, redline to 3rd, no problem! mech secondaries wide open in 4th, no problem! the car drives smoothly again, with more power than ever before. Even did a few kills tonite while testing!
I want to thank RX7Carl for the awesome sterling carb, and tons of technical advice and patience with my n00bity, 1984se for messing up my engine (but helping me a lot nonetheless in the last few months), wackyracer for always offering his help but never actually helping me and teasing me to death, giving me extra incentive to have the car running at its best.
Now for the fine tuning...

don't feel bad... i bought my REPU in february... it was running, with a 76-78 4 port 13B with a street port and a holley setup and electronic ignition from an FB... the weekend i got it... i went to pass some slow b*tch who was doing 10 under in the fast lane... dropped it down to 3rd, and popped an apex seal on the rear rotor... drove on 1 rotor till i got it home, and then tore the motor out, tore it down, got new rotor housings, apex seals, springs etc, and a rebuild kit... cleaned everything up, sandblasted the motor... touched up the ports... put it all together according to the book... get it started... it runs 10 minutes, then seizes up... oiling issue... built the motor again.. cleaned everything even more thoroughly... put it back together with a new E shaft and bearings and a new gasket kit... start it up, 10 minutes it seizes... this time there was a reason tho... in my hurry to put it back together i put the 4 bolts for the oil pump in, but didn't tighten them down... totally forgot about them... so no oil getting to the motor, its amazing it made it 10 minutes... so 3rd try... i do EVERYTHING according to the book, flush the oil cooler, clean it all inside and out as thoroughly as i could... start it up... it runs... i keep it running bout 10 minutes, then the lady at the hobby shop here on base tells me to shut it down so i can clean up my stall.. so i had to kill it... so i get it started again... drive it around base for 20 minutes, and decided its running this time... start heading to my gf's place... takes bout 10 minutes to get there from base.... get there, no probs... AS SOON AS I PARK... it seizes up again... damn thing worked for 40 minutes, and seized again.... wth... so i haven't touched it now since that happened... i'm gonna pull the motor, and take it to atkins to have them professionally clean it, also going to take the oil cooler to a shop and have them professionally flush it, then try my luck again... but in the mean time i need to get the 6 port motor i got in the back of my FB built, which means take it to atkins and have the parts cleaned by them, and take the oil cooler to a shop and have it flushed... then build it and pray i'm doing things right... this time just to be sure i am i have the atkins video for rebuilding... so i think my FB should be running in the not too distant future.... gonna have a 6 port SE motor with a holley 600 cfm carb and street port... should be pretty nice... but we'll see... i don't want to jinx myself:|

Appears to me the sooner you get a sterling, the better off you'll be then. I'm about sold on the sterling idea even though I've always dreamed of having a Weber on my 12A. Seems the sterling is just a easier (maybe better?) way to go.
So what's this about needing return line pressure? cdrad51: Are you saying you just plugged the whole thing off? No line at all going back to the tank?

that's correct. Plugging that line gave me an extra psi, which is just what I needed to make the car run right. Unfortunately, no camera available, otherwise I'd take a pic.
