Eliminating Air Pump

I am sure some of you guys have eliminated de air pump from your rx-7. What are the advantages and disadvantages. Is it worth it as far as HP increase. When eliminating are there any particular things I need to do?? As usual many thanks to those of you who take the time to answer.

No hp increase, just simplification of the car.

that's not correcct. if you remove the air pump thats one less thing that the engine as to turn. also it lets te exhaust flow freer b/c it isn't dumping air into the exhaust to "dilute" the emissions. so there is a little gain.

Mine came with the airpump removed and the backpressure pick up tube removed... yet they didn't block off the acv. There are some power gains to it, and i'm sure it could be shown on a dyno, are they substational? no. The airpump does take air from the intake, and it is a compressor so it does drag the engine down a little. Power gains would probably be 1-3hp at the wheels.

actually it's not a compressor, it's just a puff puff vane pump. If you really want a good HP gain don't run your A/C. Now, that's a compressor.

It sucks air in and blows it out... right? a compressor in my opinion. I've never seen one and really have no idea how they work though.

Compressors by definition suck air in and blow it out, however, they suck in air at one pressure, and blow it out at a higher pressure. Hence the oh-so-clever-name of compressor

The air pump isn't a compressor - it's a pump since it merely transfers air from one location to another. much like a... pump

Damn, I'm in a smartass mood today - gotta love it though

If you're running a header w/o cats, the pump serves no purpose other than creating sonic boom backfires (which I can't stand). It's also added weight and another belt to turn - not a lot in HP gains but useless none the less - However, if you do remove it, I would add the dual alt pulley.

Or per the tutorial in sig (and Carl's post) adding the 3L220 belt. Cheaper than a dual alt pulley and more effective in some ways.

Yeh - I used to have the 3L220 on my 12A but I couldn't get this belt to work on my SE due to the large A/C pulley being in the way (couldn't fit the small belt over the AC pulley). I haven't heard much negative on the dual pulley - Pratch, please share your findings - is there an issue with the dual pulley??

Not an issue per se. It's basically that the motto that Carl and I have been focusing on with the tutorials is "cheap power". If it can be done for $5, we'll show you how. If you have access to a dual sheave alt pulley, then by all means, use it. However the amount spent is going to be more than the 3L220 belt.

We're not cheap, we just like focusing on spending as little as possible
