electrical question somewhat noobish

Ok I have an 84 gsl with several electrical hookups such as gauges efan radio etc I keep loosing power and my battery dies quickly
alternator and all thats good

i think it might be the wiring but i had an idea and was wondering on some input

not sure where the problem is exactly but so i don't have the extra electrical pieces wired with the stock setup could i add an extra fuse panel and wire them to there so if the aftermarket gauges or something messes up i know exactly where its coming from and it won't mess with the stock gauges its tied into?

I have some extra fuse boxes out of like an 80 an 81 an 84 (besides the stock one in my 84) could i use one of these and have 2 fuse boxes but one for stock pieces and one for the accesories? if so how would i go about wiring the extra box to supply power to the accesories?

I'm not great on electrical **** what so ever but I'm tryin to learn and figured this might be a good idea but would like some input before i jump in and screw it all up

basically i'm loosing power somewhere and i'd like that to stop

and if something aftermarket goes out i'd like to know its just that and not something stock going out and causing the extra pieces tied into it to cut off too.

your post is not clear.

1. is the alternator charging? when the car is running the alternator is supplying power

2. if the batt is going dead after a couple of days of sitting, then its a drain. to find the drain, you put an amp meter between the battery and the battery cable when the car is NOT running.

current draw should be under 1 amp, to narrow it down you pull fuses until it goes away, then you look to see what is in that circuit.

A simple way of looking for battery drain is to connect a 12 volt light bulb in series with the battery terminal. If there is drain the light bulb will light up, dim if it is a small drain and brighter if it is larger drain. Keep in mind it will be in series and will only be half as bright. then start pulling fuses unti the light goes out, that is your starting place. Don't forget to remove or shut off the interior light because as soon as you open the door it will show a drain.

Adding an aux fuse block is always a good idea when installing aftermarket stuff. Take a look at this picture on my mock up of an X1/9 this is for MegaSquirt installation from carb to Fuel injection. I purchased this block on Ebay for about $30 and it was from a boat supplier. The 30Amp feed to the block comes from the battery to a 30Amp fuse then to the block for the fuel pumps and control unit. Keeps everything neat and it is an easy way to trouble shoot.

k sorry if it was unclear but the alt. was charging but it had a drain somewhere
im gonna try the lightbulb trick and the amp meter trick as soon as i get a chance
