EFI fuel pump

I know this has come up but I just can't find the thread:
Has anyone here tried an external EFI pump in the stock location on a previously carb'd car? I'm just going about the EFI game and I'm wondering if I can get away with this or whether I need a swirl-pot further-up.

I know which pump I'm using, it's the location that it's going in that I'm not sure on. I tried a search and didn't get much. Are the SE's and external pumpor internal? Whats everyones set-up?

Unless you modify the fuel tank you really should use an external surge tank with a low pressure pump feeding it. This is how the system should look.

Thanks what I'm thinking, but surge tanks are expensive. I may just use a sealed "catch can" from summit and plumb the return lines togather or something. I am also looking at a VW pump and "accumulator" so if anyone has a junk VW with CIS injection lemme know and I'd love to get those parts.

You can use an external EFI pump in the stock location, but it would be highly recommended that you use an SE fuel tank.It has the baffling around the pickup, which reduces pressure loss/air pickup, when the tank is below 1/4 full.
Either that or have a baffle installed in a non-SE tank,in which case you might as well go with a full intank pump setup with baffle box, like I did.

A fuel cell might be ideal but unfortunately a little spendy for now. I might just go with the swirl-pot from a VW, they look about right. I'll also just keep the tank full. I may even run a pick-up to the drain-hole and use the supply as the return.
