dropping gas tank....how to
hey guys as i posted before i purchased an 82 Rx7 gas tank is filled with rust so im wondering how can i get this thing down i cranked up the motor its running good at least for a car thats been sitting for 12 years changed oil, coolant, fresh gas im now trying to drop the gas tank to clean it out a little to see if it can at least run on its own... and do the fuel pumps on the gas tanks have a filter like the 2nd gen and 3rd gens cause i wouldnt want rust to end up inside the fuel pump...
dont flame on me guys this is my first, first gen i know about the 2nd and 3rd gens but this is my first and trying to get it going as a daily beater..

ive never dropped my FB tank, but i did with my corolla. it should be similar. you need to jack the car up, and disconnect what hoses you can reach, make sure to mark which one is which. put a jack under the tank with a flat piece of wood or something....to distibute the weight. then undo the straps it should just be clips holding the pins in. after the straps are disconnected slowly lower the jack and look for other hoses and wires you can disconnect. obviously empty the tank as much as you can first. and check the gas fill stem to see if thats secured from the gas door on the side of the car...im not sure what that's like on the fb.... no one's responded so i figured i would try to help

im not sure if the pump is even in the tank. you'll just have to unscrew a bunch of small screws to pull it out if its in the tank. you can do that when you have the tank out, just disconnect all the wires from it and mark where each one goes.
you really shouldnt try washing the tank out, and absolutly do not try to "burn it dry" or anything. you would have to take it someplace to get cleaned. or the most you could do is to do something like.....poor gas in it and rinse it out with that.....

if its leaking you can get what they have for rusted gas tanks on motorcycles. its two different bottles, one cleans the tank out with acid, and the other seals the inside. you need two for a car gas tank, and they are expensive......but i dont know your budget

To drop the tank requires you to remove the two straps that hold the tank up. I've always just removed the two rear bolts that hold the straps up, closest to the bumper. Your going to have 3 or 4, can't remember, hoses that run to the top of the tank. It's easier to remove those first, not from the tank but to where they connect to the solid lines. Remove the two straps and let the tank sag, your going to have to remove the clamp that connect the fuel neck to the tank AND the electrical plug that runs to the fuel level sender. Once your remove the fuel neck it's going to slide down so make sure to remove that plug first. If you feel like removing an access panel, there is one located behind the RL wheel, you must remove the wheel though. Three bolts hold it in place, once removed you can see the clamp for the fuel neck and the plug for the fuel level sender. Although that might or might not be there compared to my 85SE. Letting the tank sag allows you to access them also but a little more tricky.
After all that madness is done, it might be a good idea to clean up your fuel level sender connections, replace any old cracked fuel lines and any clamps, in fact i did them all. Have Fun!

It's very easy to drop the tank. After you drain it, take out the to bolts right under the bumper. I think they're 14's. Lower it with a jack very slowly cause you have to unplug the two fuel lines and the vent line.
I'll post some pics of mine tomorrow since it's out at the moment.

well you can drop the tank first, it should be easy if the lines are disconnected. if you get that out you'll have to figure out which line is which. or if the lines are cut but you can still tell which one goes to which, mark them.
