Flooding and knocking questions

Ok I have a 1982 rx-7, I have been trying to put the thing back together after someone else took it apart. My question is how do you stop a carburator from delivering fuel? and How do you unflood a rotary? Also, what would cause knock on a rotary? If theres something in the archives tell me and call me a nub because I couldn't find anything thanks for your help.

I posted this under rotary tech, but noone responded

Check the RX7 FAQ page under this Q/A for causes of flooding:

Q. I'm having trouble with my Nikki carburetor, what should I look for?
A. Sterling has written some excellent articles on the subject, check them out.
Carburetor Troubleshooting- Flooding Problems

Search on "deflood" for procedure on strating an engine that is flooded.

I've had both these problems and they're pretty well documented.

Don't know about the knocking...

Hope this helps!

The knocking could be caused by a timing issue.Mine would knock when I accelled hard.I was off a tooth on the dist.

maybe im missing something, but im my head it shouldnt seem like a rotary should knock with the timing issue. I could be wrong, but i thot knocking in a piston engine was the piston hitting or valves or whatnot, none of whiich the rotary has.

no knocking is a timeing issue when the pressure gets to high and the gas explodes under pressure not spark like a diesel engine, which can occur in a rotary, its rare, but very deadly for rotaries. Thanks alot when your rotary was knocking it didnt destroy the apex seals did it?

Spark knock in a rotary engine tends to sound like marbles rattling around inside a coffee can. Make sure all of your plug wires are routed correctly, and that the leading ignitor is actually firing the leading plugs and not vice versa...

Timeing question?

I have an 82 rx-7 I'm checking the timeing for it. The timeing should be L1 and L2 at same time right, and then T1 and T2 at same time?

No. Use L1 to check the leading timing, and T1 to check the trailing timing.

Stumbling while reving the engine

Ok I have a 1982 rx-7 that was sitting for a year before I started rebuilding it. I rebuilt the carb just recently and havn't started tuneing it yet. Whenever I slowly rev the engine up it starts to stumble, and on the way down it stumbles even more. Could it be the carburator not tuned or is it something else? Thanks

Try changing the fuel filter. That seems to be the cause of a lot of these issues, and it's cheap and easy to replace.

Try the search function with separate terms such as, Hesitation, stumbling, loss of power,no power, etc.. You should be able to find a lot of information to start with. Also as 85FB has supplied you with the FSM link. There is reference material for the testing procedures.

I recommend checking for vacuum leaks, spark to both leading and trailing ignition to start with.

Do your searching for other related things that may be causing your issues. :-)

Fuel filter replaced didn't do a whole lot. I decided to run the engine for awhile and it smoked up my garage. Its also idleing roughly at about 2000 rpms.

Ok found why it was smoking, exhaust wasn't bolted together. I guess I should have checked that.

Ok thanks for all the help ill probably reattached the exhaust tom. then warm the engine and tune the carb. I was reading an article from sterling in the archives on tuning a carb. and he said an air leak wouldn't cause stumbling. I also would like to check my timing how can i make a timing mark?
