Don't use a FRAM?
I'm in the middle of doing an oil change on my 1984 RX7 GS.
Well, I had a FRAM oil filter on it beforehand, so I figured I'd replace it with one.
"STOP." Said a fellow RX7 lover.
"FRAM's have a tendency to disintegrate and mess with the engine as they near the end of their cycle. Don't use them!"
Well, that's fine and dandy. I bought a new FRAM, but I'm willing to return it... Provided I can figure out if this is true or not, and what a good replacement might be.
Please and thank you?

I'd recommend the Purolator PURE 1 filter. There's couple of studies of oil filters out on the net and its pretty convincing why fram sucks. I'll dig up the link later. Do a seacrh on this forum for oil filter, it should pop up a discussion on them.

Sweet. Thanks a lot for clearing that up guys... I'm nineteen, and new to the rotary world. This is my first RX7. I'll be needing some help on this one for some time now.

I use the Purolator PureONE PL14459.
The only negatives the guy in the article speculated about the PureONE was that the densely-packed filter element could create problems with increased oil pressure. Well since I have an oil pressure gauge built straight into my console, I figured I'd give it a try. I'm pleased to report that it does not seem to affect pressure at all (or at least not enough to notice).
So with an anti-drainback valve, high-quality filter media and PLENTY of that filter media packed into a filter larger than stock, I found the only filter I buy and recommend. They don't even sell them here in Canada, so I always have to pick up a half dozen when I'm in the 'states to stock up.

For those who don't want to read the whole article, here's what he says about the Purolator PureONE
Everywhere else in the article and on the recommendation page that he mentions the Purolator filters, the only reason he chooses other filters above them is the "restriction concern". Since it doesn't seem to be a real concern, I go with these filters since IIRC they had the most filter area and all the "premium" features you'd want in a filter - anti-drainback, metal backplate, synthetic media....

The filter cartridge has an even more impressive surface area of 400 sqin. The potential issue is that this filter element is compressed into even more pleats (64) than the Premium Plus. This may restrict flow more than it helps relieve it, but it is hard to say for sure as the siping in the pleats are supposed to keep the pleat gaps open. It also features a spring-loaded metal bypass valve and a silicone rubber diaphragm-type anti-drainback valve, which doubles as the seal between the backplate and the cartridge. The bypass valve is located at the back of the cartridge, not at the front. The gasket is PTFE-treated for easier installation and a better seal.

Purolator Pure One
This is an interesting filter design made by Purolator. Most of the construction of the Pure One is the same as the Purolator Premium Plus. The big difference is the filter element itself. It has a dense paper/fiber filter element that can filter very small particles. The result of this is cleaner oil exiting the element, but more oil restriction. Purolator addressed this by adding more filter material (more and deeper pleats). After seeing one of these filters cut open, I am apprehensive about this filter. It seems to have so many pleats that it is almost a solid chunk of filter element. It seems like it would end up restricting the flow, more than anything. Purolator has plenty of data on the filtration abilities of this filter and I don't doubt it, but they have no flow data. Even so, I don't see any major problems with this filter. It also sports a silicone anti-drainback valve and a PTFE treated nitrile rubber gasket.

along the same lines what would be the best kind of oil to use in the car? i was using castrol synthetic for a while it seemed to work fine and i was feeling a stronger pull on the engine, but then i read somewhere in this forum that synthetic oil was not good for rotaries, so what kind of oil IS recommended?

felt like contributing more links even though they are from the same source but if one couldn't find these links.. i think they are very helpful
this one talks about all the filters and specs http://www.knizefamily.net/minimopar...ence.html#fram
then these are his opinions
