Unhappy Doesn't Like the Rain

Was driving down the road yesterday, in the pouring rain, all of the sudden the car just dies. Wanting to see if anybody else may have had this problem. Gotta an 84 gls, with a stock 12A. Any help would be appreciated.

No, Just driving down I35. I was only going around 50mph. It hesitated a couple times and then stopped. I sat there about 5 minutes, then it started right up. I bought the car back in March, the previous owner had rigged the wiring going to one of the battery cables. (The one that goes to the starter, which sounds kinda funny when I start it.)It looks like the cable broke at the clamp, so they just pulled the old cable out, and pushed the cable back through the clamp and tapped with electrical tape. The only thing I can think of is something got wet?

Did you loose all power? Kind of sound like you could have some bad battery cables.

How’s your distributor cap and wires? If they get some moisture in them they shut her down.

Yep,

Everything! Turned on the hazards, and they even went out. I did'nt get a chance to look at the distributor, live in an apartment, with it raining can't open the hood yet. I'm going to replace the one bad cable next. If that doesn't work I guess I have to found a place that does good work on 7's.

Sounds like you lost connection with your batery cable. Might as well change them both, + and -.

I agree with Jimmyv13, sure sounds like battery related.

Where’s the place you found to work on your 7?

Thanks For the help!

I don't know of any places, the previous owner took to the dealership, said he was a good mechanic. Some mechanic, found out later I have a tubular valve leak, have to have a complete re-build. Rotery Performance in Garland said Im not hurting the engine, said I need to use a heavier oil and watch my oil level. They want $2100.00 for a re-build.

What exactly is a "tubular valve leak", never heard that term before. Just got mine in May, so still learning.

Thanks,

Not for sure if that includes all. This is my first 7.

When I first got the car was going to clean the engine, I notice a small amount oil on th top of the engine and going down the sides between the front seal on the drivers side. I called Rotary Performance and they called it that.

Well that makes sense, just never hear it called that! Are you running 20w50 in it, if not that may help slow the leak.

I could live quite well with a small leak vs. a $2,100.00 engine, but that's just me!

I've heard nothing but good things about Rotary Performance!

I had some bad termals and my would just die when it was cold or wet. I replaced both pos and neg and it has worked fine ever since.
I had my engine rebuilt from rotory performance and it has been running great ever since. All I need now is to have them check my fuel pump since I am getting power fade above 100. The pump is 19 years old, its about time I get a new one.

It’s an SCCA Sanctions racing series, using 1st gen. RX7’s. The SCCA has a specification you build the car around. This link has some great info, although it’s the 1999 Rules http://www.rx7-miata.com/srx7/srx7specs.html
