does vin tell you gs/gsl?
just wondering, was never told if my car was an original gs or gsl car wheni bought it, and one day i had it on jackstands and the ebrake was up and i noticed that one wheel was spinning, so the ebrake either is broken on one side or is the incorrect cable for the rear end... its drum brakes which i know was a gs thing, but something tells me the car was originally a gsl, and someone put a gs rear in it. it has a sunroof so i know its at least a gs, but it just bugs me not knowing lol
any help would be greatly appreciated.

as the others have said the vin won't tell you anything except the engine.
however there are a few things that are unique to the GSL, so its pretty easy to tell a GSL from an S/GS. its harder to tell an S/GS apart
the GSL always has a sunroof. the GS usually does, S doesn't. the GSL has a rear wiper, which is easy to install remove, but the rear WASHER nozzle is installed in the roof, so there are two holes for it, the lower models will not have this.
the GSL has power windows, the S/GS are manual.
GSL has power mirrors and cruise control, the GS has the mirrors and i think cruise is an option, the S will have neither
along with the power windows the GSL has different seats and door panels. leather is an option on the GSL and its not on the other trim levels
the GSL also always has a/c, in 84-85 the logicon will be the power one, and power steering is optional. most S and GS's have ac, but they won't have the other stuff.
the S and GS are a little harder to tell apart, the S has manual mirrors, its missing the map lights, and trunk light, so its really small stuff

i think there was an additional tax on AC systems so Mazdas in the US usually have a system that is installed at the port of entry, even well into the 90's.
the other thing is that Mazda US was either 5 separate companies, or had just merged from 5 different companies, so there are a lot of weird regional differences.
