Deceleration Dashpot
When letting go of the gas (taking foot off peddle) RPMs drop all nice to @1000, hangs out, says "whats up, one thousand rpms?" then drops to 750-800 after 1 sec. I think its my deceleration dashpot. AND I WILL CRUSH IT! Unless I'm wrong, and I will benevolently leave it be, free to do whatever it does. So, opinions? You hold its fate in your hands.

Hmmm
I see you have a GSL. Got cruise control? Had the same problem on my -SE, or similar anyway. When cold it idled down to 800, and when it was hot would usually not go under 1000, except once in a while without warning. I thought it was the throttle plates or dashpot sticking, and it felt like it. I could just touch the throttle linkage and the idel would go back down to 800.
What it turned out to be was the cruise control cable was about 1 turn of the adjusting nut too tight. I want to be clear - this cable did not look or even feel tight, but it kept just enough pressure so that between it and the push from the dashpot, it kept the throttle slightly open.
I just wasted by breath if you don't have cruise, but what the hay....

Cruise Control, your insolence has become overwhelming. I have been nice to you, allowing you to not work, babying you, keeping your switch on my center console. If i find that you are behind this, the rest of your short life will be spent in the tower. Do you understand? You will never see your precious rear window wiper switch again! Thank you, Sir Whanrow. Your cooperation will not go unrewarded.

Mine did it again
Mine started doing it again today. Today it was well over 90 degrees, and it seems when it gets real hot under the hood, somehow it pulls the cruise cable tighter. Doesn't make sense - things expand in the heat not contract. The cable felt like it had some slack, but it was still putting some pull on the throttle. I backed it off another turn, and voila perfect 750 again.

My GSL will sometimes do the samething. When it does, I noticed the shutter valve having a slight delay closing after decelerating. I have poured a little oil down the vacuum tube on the air cleaner assembly that feeds the shutter valve thinking maybe this will help. As long as it does not get too bad I quit concerning myself. The original one froze up in the open position and the car never would idle back down to 800rpms. It took me a few busted knuckles but I got it replaced.
