Dash Lights

For about 6 months now, my dash lights haven't worked. On anything. Does anyone have a wiring diagram, or any ideas why? It happened right after I changed my transmission, when I took the bezel that holds the clock, and goes around the radio etc. 81 GSL.

This is getting annoying, and I'd like to see some gauges. Kinda scary not being able to see temp/OP etc.

Thanks,

LT7

Ok, I've checked all fuses, and the fusible links on the driver side strut tower, as well as the dimmer switch. Does this mean that all the bulbs are blown? Is it possible for every bulb to blow at once, in case I might have arced something while taking center console apart?

If in case I do have to take the instrument cluster out, how hard is that to do on these cars? Do you have to drop the steerling column?

I have the same problem. My Dash lights are absent and the dimmer on them is not connected at all. I beleive before you drop ur column and pull ur cluster check the connection to the dimmer. The is also a single wire that goes to the top to what I believe powers the darn thing. Let me guess the rest of you gauges all still work and warning lights still turn on eh!.

By the shifter, you put two wires togther that aren't supposed to be together. Unplug them from each other and replace the fuse.

You might need a new dimmer switch too, the lights don't work without it.

you can bridge 2 wires on the dimmer switch and get them on full bore whenever the lights are on. Search i had the same prob and fuond an answer(red to black i believe thou. Ull blow a fuse if u hook up the wrong 2 on accident.

Direct Freak,

I've checked all the fuses and they're good. And i did test out the connection to the dimmer switch with a jumper wire. There's definitely power there, and I'm pretty sure the dimmer switch works. I guess I'll have to Ohm it tomorrow.

Do you know what color the mis-connected wires are? And what fuse in the fuse block they have a tendency to blow?

Marek- Yes, all the gauges still work, and every indicator light works. The only lights that aren't working are the illumination lights in the instrument cluster, AND the temp controls. The radio works...go figure that's on a different circuit.

Where the shifter goes, remove the shifter surround (plastic).
Find a set of loose wires there with a bullet plugs (male and female)

Make sure they are unplugged from each other.

Then check the fuse for ILLUM or something.

If it still doesn't work, then disconnect the Dimmer switch and
by-pass it, as it may be fried.

Good luck.
