Custom Dash!

Well it took a while to do, but here's my layout for my custom dash is DONE.

Again, the base picture is from Matt's World 'o' Luvin. Thanks for letting me 'borrow' the pics (I gotta get a scanner )

From left to right, top to bottom:
Boost, Tachometer, Speedometer/Odometer, Water Temp, Voltometer, Fuel Level, Oil Press and Oil Temp

But the oil temp isn't a sure thing. I'm not 100% sure what should go there. Any advice is apreciated.

Also has anyone else used AutoMeter Phantom gauges?

Thanx,
-Spencer

Replace oil temp with a fuel pressure guage,, but very nice work!! I will say that it's gonna be expensive!! I personally like the silver guages better cause you can match them to the silver piece on the dash. I only have 2 autometer guages in mine they are easy to install (somewhat) and work sooo much better than stock guages. My oil pressure guage moves faster than my factory RPM guage. While you are at it get athe a/f guage and put it where the original clock used to be. Thats what I did and it look wicked. VERY NICE!!

P.S. you have a turbo too DAMN!!

Actually I don't have a Turbo, I'm getting an SC, but I don't have that yet either. I'm just adding the gauge now since the dash is going in now. I'll be adding the SC in about a year or so (sooner if funds permit).

If you go and look dashboard pic here you can see my plans for the stock clock space. I'm planning on using a Wolf3D EMU with the SC, and it has an A/F readout on the handheld control unit, so I think I'm okay there. Fuel Pressure intsead of Oil Temp is a good possibilty.

And yeah, it's gonna cost a fair bit. But hey, this car is gonna rock when I'm done.
I'm just lucky that mf G/F is a big RX-7 fan too and understands my obsession.

looks great, i would leave the oil temp in there, imo and just do a rail mounted fuel pressure in the engine bay area. you were talking about mounting the wolf 3d controller, i took out the ashtray and the backing of it too. controller fits right in there slides in and out but it fits good

Thanks guys!

rx7passion
Cool! I had actually thought about mounting it there but I hadn't measured yet to see if it would actully fit.
And I hadn't thought about an engine bay fuel press, but it's a good idea.

Matt
Wour car looks just like mine inside so it was perfect! Plus you had high res pics of the exact areas I needed.
Thanks again!

Looks pretty good. I'm looking at doing something like that, but I really like the Blue backlit guages. I have already done my center console in carbon fiber overlay and digital guages, no ashtray and Kenwood stereo/eq.

What size gauges are you using, and are you considering mass producing these? Perhaps just sell the cluster minus the gauges and people can add their own gauges.

Personally I'd keep all of them except boost. No forced induction here, I'd add manifild vacuum or something. Reserve boost for when I waste the 12A and have no choice but to add a 13BT or a blown 12A.

Wow! A lot more intrest here than I thought there'd be.

Viperx7:
Check out my planned center console thread:
https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=24459

The ashtray will also be replaced with somthing else, either the Wolf3D EMU remote controller (in the spring when I get one), a center console speaker of some sort (probably the
Kenwood KSC-900CTR), or somthing custom.
Carbon fibre is cool, but I like the look of the stock setup
The gauges come with interchangeable green and and red backlights, which is cool with me 'cause I like gree (My car's name is Kermit, lol).

Pele
The guage I have on the upper left is a boost/vac, so I get the benifit either way Which is good 'cause I don't need the boost part yet, and since my SC is gonna have a bypass valve anyways, it lets me see how the car runs when the SC isn't on.

The sizes in the pic are VERY approximate, but they're supposed to be 5", 2 5/8", and 2 1/16" They SHOULD all fit at those sizes, but once I work out the exact dimentions I'll know for sure. Worst case, the speedo and tach will either have to be downsized or two of the 2 1/16" will have to go, but like I said, according to my preliminary design work, it SHOULD fit.

As for mass production... I hadn't thought about it. It might be possible, but I'll have to look into it. Basically I'm going to do is do the design up in CAD then let CNC router do it's thing. But the CNC router isn't mine, so I'll have to see about getting more access.

setzep
What do you want on it? Lemme know and I'll see what I can do.

And BTW, I use Corel Photo-Paint, not Photoshop

Me too!
The G/F's parents have a scanner, but using that would mean seing them... *shudder*
I saw enough of them for Thanksgiving dinner yesterday to last a couple months (We have a much earlier Thanksgiving than Americans).

I suppose I'll have to buy a scanner or digital camera sooner or later. Anyways, I'll post my progress here one way or another.

Just checked out your website, pretty slick.. I do have a question for you. Did you ever get your Voodoo ****? I tried to order one awhile back, and they couldn't get it right, so they just gave up refunded my money and gave me a hat. Did you ever get it? What finish? Thanks... I still really want one....

Since there isn't as much space in the earlier years don't think all those gauges would fit in my insturment cluster. I'd like the speedo, tach, water temp, fuel level, boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure somewhere in my car. For sure the spedo and tach in the cluster, supprise me with the rest What ever is left over will probably on the A piller or by the radio somewhere.

Has any found a gauge compatible with our Fuel Send for fuel level, and what about the speedo, what will be needed to get that to work in our car?
I to would like to have new Autometer Gauges in my dash to replace the 16 year old ones.

smnc, have the instrument cluster done yet for the 83?

Max7, thats a good question about the fuel sender and speedo. I wonder if you could just put in a resistor or something if the gauge read off hmm.... Pele?? you there?

Not yet. I've had a busy week. The late night supervisior at my work came down with a bad flu, so I've been covering for him working a bunch of double shifts. It's a bitch working 18 hours days.

He just came back tonight, so I'll finally have some free time this week.

I'll probaly finish it tonight or tommorow.

Hey Max7... I have some simple solutions for your probs!

Summit and other places sell 12-gallon fuel cells for "Pro Street" applications that have GM sending units built in. OK so it's not totally stock but it's always good to have a fuel cell.

As for the speedo drive... AFAIK all US cars are designed to have 1000 speedo cable RPM at 60mph. At least, that is the rule of thumb. I've heard/been told/read somewhere that Japanese cars are built to 1000 s.c. RPM at 100km/h, or 62mph, so it would read slightly low. Put bigger tires on. My speedo (it's working correctly again - ARGH) reads 10% too high... to go 60 the gauge has to point at 66-67mph.

Or you could put one of these babies behind that 13B...

no, it turns out that the specs they have for the **** is for a series I rx-7. Of course this does not mean Generation 1, it means something lame like 78-80 or something. I've got what they call a series III (84-85 -SE) I guess the threads on the shift lever changed somehow at somepoint. Not 100% sure. I'd really love that polished ****, and I don't want to pay a premium for a momo ****.

IIRC, there are adjustable speedo gears that allow you to "tune" the number of revs the speedo sees. This lets you correct for odd sized tires, ect.

BTW, my old winter car / first car (a Chevy Spectrum / Isuzu I-Mark) is rated for 1024revs / mile

WOO-HOO!

I finally managed to finish the '83 gauge cluster. It was a lot harder to do than the '84-'85.

It's a rough layout, as I don't have the exact size of the dash for the '83, but it should be close enough.

speckamp, my bro has an Isuzu I-Mark. He kinda wanted to put a turbo engine in it or a rotary. Pretty cool huh?

Speaking of dash and gauges, I installed a tach in his car. It's a stick shift model without a tach (it only had an U/S light).
