Talking And Cue Insanity...

I would love some input as to things I should 'keep an eye out for' while fixing, or attempting to fix whatever the ____ the previous owner did to this poor FB. I said I was going to take pictures of the duct tape abuse, and I really meant to, but when it came down to having to fix it, I didn't have a camera handy. However I will describe what I found.

The Previous Owner apparently removed the Air Pump, emissions dohickey. And then they decided instead of actually sealing off the open hoses and stuff correctly, they decided they would use duct tape. I know, anything can be fixed if you have enough duct tape. (they didn't have enough).

As I got a little more into it, Duct Tape wasn't all they used. The best way to describe it is... 'Duct Tape Tampon'. I know that is conjuring up some very interesting and probably disturbing mental images. It looks like perhaps they very tightly rolled up like a washrag or tampon, and then cut it in half and shoved it in the pipes, then they used ducttape to hold it in place, or seal the end of the pipe, or whatever... I have a word to sum up the result.
"FAIL!"

It is a good thing that where that pipe leads, there is a very sharp 90º corner, that the tampon couldn't make, and that is where it was prevented from getting sucked into the intake manifold.

Also, the previous owner seems to have removed the A/C compressor, but managed to leave breadcrumbs of the rest of the system.

Going back to things that were used as they were 'NEVER' intended to be used...

Yanno those blue plug things, that you get in certain cheapie picture hanging kits? drill hole in wall, put blue thing in, put screw in blue thing, hang picture from screw.
well, they used the blue thing to plug a vacuum line. (this particular blue thingy is not solid)... most aren't. So, there's another vacuum leak.

So, there was no AC compressor, and no Air Pump, which means just 1 belt on the whole works. did manage to find a 22" belt at the parts store, and with the help of a friend got that put on there. Pulled off the extra pulley off the front of the engine that was there for air pump and ac. Still need to finish removing the rats nest and the rest of the emissions crap.

5 Days ago, I thought that the car smelled a little more Molotov Cocktail and a little less Lawnmowery. The carb is now vomiting gasoline all over the outside of the engine. This is not a good sign, but it is doing a good job of cleaning the engine. (good thing I quit smoking a few days before that...)

Now, if I had tools here, (all my tools are in storage in New Mexico, and I live in Minnesota currently...) I would have that thing torn out, and probably would have done something fun for parts washing, like given it a ride through the dishwasher or something equally inappropriate but amusing nonetheless.

I've rebuilt a lot of carbs in my life, done a lot of 'fine tuning' and creative tweaking, but looking at the diagram for the Nikki, well, I really wish that I had a 13b with EFI.
My Mechanic friend wants to put on a new exhaust $250.00. I'm thinking, yank the rats nest, and just before it goes on the lift, I'll pull the carb and work on that while they are breaking the exhaust. Still, I'm not looking forward to it.

Mechanically, the vehicle is pretty sound. It needs a left front strut, soon, and might as well replace the rest as well.
List of things to fix...
Drivetrain:
U-joints on the drive shaft, front and rear.
must figure out how to replace hubs to more common auto bolt pattern. (my mechanic is threatening to order ATV rims.)
btw, anyone know offhand the offset of the stock rims?
Interior:
The Joystick has to go. I ordered a part from Atlanta RX7 to replace it, for my year and my model, and they sent the wrong damn part. Plus the plastic holder clips broke off when I tried to put it back into place. I've decided that I am going to just bypass the joystick thing altogether, (anyone know of an aftermarket part to do this?).

Most of the interior plastic parts... looks like this guy was giving rides to Freddy, or Edward Scissor Hands. Not really sure what to do with them.
Once the joystick is gone the center console is going to look funny. I have decided that I am going to Fabricate a new center console. (I wish I had my tools that are in storage in New Mexico... )
Turn signal switch is broken, (the car is hard enough to try to drive with two hands, taking one away to operate the turn signal adds a whole new degree of difficulty.)
Radio has to be replaced. but it can wait till a little later.
drivers front speaker is blown.
Since I'm going to keep it, the drivers side door armrest has to go. I'm 6'4", and it gets in the way of working the clutch.
Rear Glass will eventually need to be replaced, but for now the fix my mechanic did will work. Apparently there is supposed to be a rear windshield wiper bolted through the glass. this is not the case. Mechanic fixed it with RTV. I have two RTV plugs in the holes in the glass, and now it's water tight, the car no longer smells like mildew.
car is dirty. car needs to have the interior gutted and cleaned. (before I get pulled over, have the car searched by drug sniffing dogs, and get put in jail for **** the previous owner left behind.) I've already found and removed about a nickel bag worth of pot. (don't ask about it, I flushed it. I don't like drugs.)
Exterior: some rust will need to stop it before it spreads, after much staring at, I have finally decided that this guy rear ended a truck, I'm thinking Ford F350 Supercab... However I can't figure out how he got the front end high enough to shove the hitch receiver in between the headlights. (Probably involved duct tape).
I'll need to locate replacement panels for pretty much everything forward of the rear wheel wells.
My mechanic says forget the exterior, build up the engine and stuff, and blow the doors off nice looking cars.
So, I'd love feed back as to suggestions of things I should keep an eye out for, suggestions on locating any of the parts I've mentioned, (exterior is Low Priority).
suggestions on things I should do to the interior, things I could do the exterior, and where to find a free 13b EFI, with free shipping. j/k, mostly...

Can't make heads or tails of what you are saying, but CONGRATS on joining us in the darkside!

Use search button/FAQ's/etc blah blah.

Sounds like the PO jury rigged everything. As for my emissions removal, mine consists of a
small filter on the oil fill tube, and a 3.0l Dodge caravan (1990) PCV valve running form the
intake to the center iron port. Make sure the PCV is situated to where it can only be sucked
into the manifold, not blown into the iron.

As for the carb flooding, where is it flooding from? I usually end up with the secondaries just
dumping fuel into the throats. Tap a screwdriver handle or something light a few times on top
of the carb to unstick the needles. Happens

Hope all gets well, post some pictures when you can!

Rotary newb...
Find an SE and ditch current car. $1000 for an SE in Portland, OR with 80k original. I'm thinking something's wrong with it, but at least the body looks straight. Thanks for the thread. I'm enjoying the humor and trying to create an image of what your car must look like... both above and under the hood.
(By the way, I'm a newb too.)

lol, my car budget was $1000, I got the car, the tabs, insurance, and the title transferred within that budget. I'm stuck with the one I have until I can afford to buy another car, and from what I've been hearing, I'll be having to buy a winter car, because of how much trouble these are to start cold.

I WIN!!!
I think it's a doorknob award... I tried to bypass the stereo joystick... and I must've read the wiring diagrams very wrong. Lights, Camera, ACTION, cue smoke machine, ahem, the wiring harness between the stereo deck and the amplifiers is taking the place of the smoke machine... Can't figure out what I did wrong there... but, now the radio wont turn on. (which is weird cause I hear the power antenna relay firing when I press the power button on the stereo.)
I'm not sure what all I did, and I'm not sure how to fix the existing stuff, but after much wandering around the boards I discovered that anyone that does decide to wire it for sound, takes out/bypasses the stock stuff.

I found speakers for the front and rear, (not top of the line, but they are at least pretty electric blue.) and I got a Single DIN DVD/mp3/wma/blah blah blah, basically it'll read everything I've got. and it has a itty bitty dvd screen built into it.
When that arrives, I'll have music! Cue fast driving music...

I also ordered new shocks and struts and those should be here about the same time as the audio stuff, and by that time the shop that is supposed to do my exhaust should have a time slot open..

I attempted to get into the rats nest today, Seeing as the previous owner did a half *** job of pulling the emissions, I get to clean up the mess.
Although I did save a copy of the walkthrough, I've kinda been hopping around pulling off stuff in one area, and working my way around. I called a few places around town, and not a single one of them was willing to sell me a sheet of aluminum so I could make blocking plates.
So, I wandered over to Home Depot, I was originally thinking of one of the galvanized junction box covers from home electric, but one of my friends found a round junction box cover, pretty thin, but it is made of aluminum, and, it has enough tensile strength to make a seal plate, just add rtv.
picked up a tool set while I was there, again not top of the line but something to use while I wait for my tools to get shipped... (looks like I may have to drive down to get them, Road Trip!).

my roommate left me his tool kit this morning when he went to work... It was damn near worthless, my hand is longer than the socket driver. If he played golf, it could be used as a spike tool with very little alteration.

I'll add some pics tomorrow, I've almost got my phone to talk to my computer.

you now need a new radio..... yes good luck on bypassing the joystick thingy.

be very careful i had a friend who screwed that up also and he fried every harness in the dash, started with the dash/interior lights wire but the heat off that one burned through other more important ones and this caused shorts although his harnesses, we had to replace every interior harness by the time we were done to fix the problems

ok, halfass rebuilt the carb, for the following reasons/excuses. #1 couldn't get key screws out of it. #2 when I got the carb off, found a large pool of antifreeze hidden under it. (no idea where that came from.) #3 ran out of daylight/patience.

I had already decided that I was going to replace the engine anyways, so to me it's kinda like polishing a turd. I'll keep it running till I have the money for the new engine, but that's all I want to do.

and with help from another poster, I managed to get the rats nest routing all figured out.
I didn't touch the mixture or idle screws when I did the rebuild. and now it idles at 1500 rpm when it's warmed up.

later today I intend to reset the timing back 10degrees and see if that lowers the idle a smidge, then go back and do the tuning to the carb with the repairs done so far. I have a suspicion that the last time it was tuned was when it was all screwy.

as for the rats nest removal, they say use 22mm bolts... Don't!
Use 12mm bolts, more than long enough, and 20 mm bolts won't go in all the way. which is why I broke one off in one of the bolt holes.
so the patch plate for where the air control valve was, only has 2 bolts holding it on instead of 3.
tried to drill out the broken one, but that was essentially useless. I'll talk to my mechanic later this week and see if he has any thoughts on how to do it. I'd rather have 3 bolts holding that plate on.
I know I promised pictures, but I can't provide right now, I had a decent camera phone, and I dropped it, and now it can't remember that it has a camera, much less that it stored pics on it somewhere...
Time for a new phone I guess.
This week I plan to remove all the stereo related wiring harnesses, and amps, and front speakers, I should be getting the new deck/front speakers toward the end of the week.
I'm pretty sure that this week will be when the shop has time to do the exhaust, and while I'm looking forward to it, I'm also a little worried. It's going to be straight pipe from the header all the way back.

Yea

I hear you, I have trouble starting my car in the cold. I use mine for work but I take it on monday leave it at work for the week and I use my company truck all week. I feel confident leaving it at work because we have security and they know me so if they see another face driving it they will not let them leave the premises not even my wife....lol I try to use it some weeks I will just drive it everyday just to get her moving all the time and not let her sit around in the garage...lol but I understand I get fustrated when she doesn't want to start.

So... On with the adventures....

I ordered 2 sets of poly coned speakers for the front and back speakers, and the cones were supposed to be electric blue. at least the deck is the same one I ordered, the front speakers "ARE NOT" what I ordered and I'm upset with Sonic Electronix. First because it took them a month to ship out the parts of my order that they 'had' in stock, and second they sent me the wrong damn speakers. And thirdly, They changed my order, and had the ***** to tell me that I ordered the 'wrong' speakers. I told them either send me out the wrong 6.5" speakers, or refund my money, which ever would allow me to never have to speak to them again faster.

So then I hooked up the stereo, totally bypassing the stock amps. had to remove the drivers seat to get to the harness for the speakers. Finally got it all done, and wala! Cue Smoke Machine! only this time, it was magic smoke escaping from my brand new stereo deck.

So, where the plugs plugged into the back, the hot and the ground were right on top of eachother, and they shorted out 'right there'... before the fuse...
again, sorry no pics yet. anyways, I looked at it for a bit, and there were some parts that looked like they got really hot and crispy, but luckily, all the parts on the main board seem to be fine. I spent all weekend etching a new pc board for the replacement mounting plug, and getting it mounted in place. Tested it last night, and although I could mostly figure out where everything went, the parts dealing with the always hot/switched hot/and grnd were totally turned to ash.
so I did the best I could with deciphering what was on the main board. after my test I realized that where I thought was switched hot, was really always hot, and where I thought was always hot, was really switched hot. so, now the stereo has a red wire for always hot, and yellow for switched hot. I would have been willing to fix them for the right colors, but the red wire was soldered to the board since the 'other' plug broke off as I was installing it.

and now... well, I have mysterious shorts all through the electrical.
I have headlights, can't put them down. I have brake lights/ turn signals/ hazards.
I have no dash lights, no running lights, no parking lights... not sure what else I don't have... not sure I want to find out.

since enough of the necessary parts work for daytime travel, I believe I'll be heading out after a bit for a bunch of fuses, and head down to my friends shop and start searching for shorts :|

O-rings on the intake manifold gasket may be leaking. Coolant actually flows thru the intake mani on these cars.
