Cool Hood Mod? Poll

Do you even own a rotary? If not I don't even want to hear from you. As far as anyone else with over 1000 post in les than 35 years you are spending to much time on hear and not under the hood of you car. I would like to hear form someone that still has some grease under ther finger nails.
and im pretty sure no one has over a thousand posts in 35 years. And if you were, idno trying to insult trochoid and quoted the wrong ****** person maybe you should read through some of his threads. He is one of the more (maybe one of the most) helpful and knowledgeable people in the first gen section. And knows quite alot about 2nd gens to boot.
So maybe you should think about who you are insulting because when you ask for opinoinsor advice (or maybe you know everything so dont need it) people will be less likely to contribute.

the reverse hood does make it easier to work on the car.
you have way more clearance plus it looks cooler when you open the hood.
dont start flaming everyone here, they are just trying to help you out and give you their honest opinion. this is by far one of the better sections on the forums.
if you feel so compelled to have the hood going up the other way do it. maybe you will inspire other members to consider the mod.

the hood is backwards so it doesnt get blown open by the high pressure that builds up under the hood. The latch is a one hook deal too, their is not a safety latch to catch it once the primary hook fails.
I suggest when you reverse your hoods latching properties, that you get an alternative latch system to keep it safe. 2hooks. hoodpins.. etc

first of all, quit being such a dumbass, if you asked for opinions you should have expected some comments that don't agree with your train of thought.
second of all...why? because you wanna be different?
it's gonna take way more work than you think, you're gonna have to first of all take everything off, then remount everything where you want it, which includes trimming the hood supports to allow the hood to open the other way and also adding supports in the front then extending the release cable... adding some sort of safety catch just in case...too much work for no efficiency gains
last but not least, it's not "cooler" how many times have you popped a car's hood and had someone said "ooh your hood opens regularly, that's awesome!!" ..... exactly.

For this reason alone, I wouldn't drive anywhere with the hood unlatched.
BTW -- if a forward opening hood pops open, it's not really so bad. If you can get past the alarm of it happening, there's a fairly large gap you can see through beneath the lower edge of the hood. I know -- it happened to me on the highway.

I've bought some mustangs that the hood has opened on the highway, and it's a pile of stupid money and time to fix the dents, dings, and plastic. The forward tilting hood is what it is. People don't buy an old volkswagen beetle and be like wtf? why is the engine in the back? Do what you want it's your car, but if it's that big a deal, just buy a second gen.

Also, it wouldn't be that hard to come up with 1,000 posts in a matter of a month if you wanted to. That holding true, that gives you eleven more months in the year to work on whatever you wanted to. When you put that into perspective, you're kind of making yourself look like an idiot here.
I can't entirely agree with Steve on this one. Performance value is one great reason to modify something, another is efficiency. If something works in a more efficient manner, it makes sense to modify it to that (and that goes beyond performance). This hood modification does neither of those. The way the hood pops makes everything extremely easy to get to in the engine bay. No reason in the world to ruin that.

I like the reverse hood because it is different. I like the whole rx7 because it is different, what with the rotary and all. My IHC Scout II has a reverse hood also. The hood makes it different, and so does being an IH. I feel safer in a reverse hood vehicle, especially when they are 25 or 35 years old. Parts rust, hood latches rust and fail. My wife's Jeep GC hood flew open at about 35 mph, the car needed a new hood and hinges. It was the fault of the body shop who just "finished" work on the truck. It is frightening.

If you really want to be different, make it hinge to the right side like a grand piano. That way, it produces shade for you while you work on it, and it can only pop open if you spin to the left at better than a gee... and it won't hit anything.
Paint it glossy black, and call it "FrankenSteinway."
Now, that would be different.
It's not being "different" to make it open exactly the same as the vast majority of cars.

do what you like but its not going to be realized by any normal car enthusiasts as a cool thing. The rotary owners will be asking why did you go through all the trouble of re engineering a perfectly sweet hood from factory.

<has grease under fingernails
I think it would be a difficult mod. Our rx-7 hoods are not all that strong in the first place, and so setting up a hinge system on the back, where the structural strength seems to be the least, would either require adding metal or result quickly in a deformed hood. This is not to flame you, do whatever you like, I just think it would be a difficult process for little actual gain. The nose cone on our cars sticks out another good foot or so beyond the hood, so making the engine bay accessible only from the front might make you enjoy working on the car somewhat less also.
