Comman Rust?

Well I finally worked out the deal on a '85 GSL RX-7 and wanted to know if rust near the hatch lock is a comman thing. Looks to be pretty bad with some of the damage now in the trunk from water getting in there. It is a beautiful bronze colored car with a set of 15" BBS deep dish Gold rims with polished lip. Is this going to effect the structure of the car if not fixed immediately? IF repaired is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Thanks for the input and remember I am new to these Rotary powered machines!

Hey and welcome to the forum. Check out the faq page, and use the search button. These are very useful for reasearch and we prefer you searching before you post a question that has already been posteed like 50 times(no start threads). Well anyways if theres rust there, there's probably more. The most common place is behind the storage bins and underneath the wheel wells. Just check everywhere-its a killer on our cars and takes time and money. To repair it you will need ss metal and a welder adn some skill. People here have done it so they'll help you out on repairing it. Post some pics of your car when you have a chance and never go back to pistons again. Good luck and god bless you

Sorry about that search function stuff and will get some pics up tonight, promise! I love the look of this car setting on the BBS wheels, I think maybe it was the reason for getting the car even though I knew about the rust! If any houston guys are here, there is a 83 or so RX-7 at the West Road Pick-a-part setting on some dark grey BBS's, think there is only three though. Guess the best start would be to find a donor car and cut the needed sheet metal off it?

Well hopefully you will turn your head around and be glad you got the car because of the sharp looks and the rotary engine. So what are the upgrades on the 7? How many miles? Post some history about it. What model is it(S, GS, GSL, GSL-SE, etc.)

i dont usually make fun of people for spelling errors, but its common, not comman (its cuz im in school right now, hahaha) but ya, check under the wheel wells, the seem where they weld along on the bottom edge of he car, where the spare tire is, and thats about all i can think of for right now.

theres a drain tube in front of the taillights, atleast there are in my 80', and one of those could be disconnected causing water to leak in. the seal along the rear hatch could also be going bad. hope this helps.

Owell did'r the hard way. Anyways welcome to the forums, and have fun.

Sorry about the spelling, at work and trying to squeeze this in because I cannot stop thinking about that little freaking car! Good link to some useful information, looks like I have some fun stuff to look forward too! The problem with my car's rust was that the original owner never cleaned out the rear drain or window channel and after 8 years of sitting outside it did what it did. Will need to check storage bins because someone stole the glass sunroof and the guy who owned the car covered it with a slip and slide (I know, you can laugh). It was damp inside with a nice film of mildew and I have been trying to let it dry out. Hopefully my newly aquired Miata seats will fit, new seats are black and interior is brown? I can see why yall love these little things, I have to get this thing on the road, MUST Drive!

Welcome to the addiction!! Trust me, they really are addicting (I had one, sold it to a friend, 2 years later I'm buying it back, lol)... nothing like a drive in a 7, you'll see what I mean when yours hits the road.

There is a "for sale" section of the forum, check it often - for things like your seats, sunroof, etc. Get friendly with Pick n Pull, too.

Pull the storage bins out from behind your seat & check around there. If the drain tubes weren't draining, I'm going to bet that you're going to find some unusual rust locations, but check the normal spots first.

Good luck with your new love... she's gonna take up a hell of a lot of time!
