combination switch and steering wheel replacement

I’ll try to be brief…Recently a friend gave me a HKS steering wheel and I’ve been kind of doing a slow cruise control addition to my car so I figured “as long as I’m putting the steering wheel in, I may as well swap in the, new to me, combination switch with cruise control stalk”.

Pretty straight forward…pulled the old steering wheel (it was a bitch, but read a recent thread and wiggled it for about 10 mins or so..), unscrewed the steering surround , and took off the old combination switch and swapped in the new. A little background on the switch, bought it from a member on this forum…was pretty dirty, so I sprayed it with electrical cleaner, I may have over done it because I sprayed most of the old grease out of it too (what kind of grease can I use, because all of the switches are kind of tight?).

I notice right away, that the original had this 2 prong plastic piece right on the center column.

and the one I was putting in, didn’t have it…..at first I tried to pull it off, but didn’t want to break it…so I just went ahead and installed without it….now my turn signals don’t cancel….does anyone know how to remove this 27 yr. old piece without breaking it?

And also…everything works fine with the new switch, except the brights don’t always come on…..sometimes they come on….sometimes they don’t….doesn’t matter if I wiggle the stalk, pull back gently or quickly….just kind of goes on when they want and stays off when they want… Any ideas on how to fix this?

The center piece is avail for cheap at Mazdatrix. I have had sucess in removing these carefully prying with a flate blade on each side. But they are very brittle and break VERY easy.

I would try and spray some more with cleaner. As far as the grease goes, I have used white grease. I don't know if this is a bad thing, but I have not had any problems yet.

That piece is your turn signal cancel - need to replace.

Also, Dielectric or white lithium works well on the parts.
