Clutch slave cylinder going out?
I got my 79 in Dec of 09.It is not tagged so i dont drive it besides around the block or so.I was checking my fluids the other day and noticed my fluid for the clutch was about 1" low.The fluid was also real dirty.I topped it off and left it at that.Last night i took it for a spin.I came up to a stop, pushed in the clutch,it was in 1st,but it kept pulling.I had to ****** it out of gear. Then it would not go into gear.Well after pumping the pedal i was able to put it in gear.I got the car home and looked under the dash to look for a leak and found it had leaked, but nothing real bad.

If its leaking out the back of the master then that is one of the cauese, remember these are supposed to be sealed and isolated systems. I suggested you get a new master cylinder and flex hose as well take out the slave and clean it good, flush the hardline well and put some fresh fluid in.

Remove and Replace
I had this same problem a couple of years ago and it really wasn't that much trouble. The worst part is having to crawl under the steering column to loosen the bolts that hold the master cylinder in place. I actually got my teenage son to crawl under there since his hands are smaller.
Upon inspection of the parts, the pistons were pretty corroded and that is why it was leaking as bad as it was.
Bleeding is not that difficult the valve should be on the clutch release sylinder. You'll need a bottle a vinyl tube and plenty of fluid. It's just like bleeding breaks.

Brake fluid coming out of cluch master cylinder?
I have posted a thread on my clutch problem.I replaced the slave cylinder and tried to bleed it.It worked for a minute. So i figure i still have air in the lines.I get my wife to pump the pedal, tell her to hold it and while she is pumping it fluid is coming out of the **** hole on the cap and when i crack the bleeder screw it trickles out. What the heck is wrong?

When you pump the clutch pedal, fluid shoots out of the pee hole on the cap on the master cylinder. My batt is dead on my camera and it is night.I will post pic in the morning.

If you only replaced the slave cylinder you may still be leaking out of the Master. Also, when you bleed and you say that your wife pumps, you do mean that she presses the pedal down after you open up the pee hole, you close and she lets up on the pedal - repeat until no air bubbles are visible. If I remember correctly, it took about a dozen repetitions before I got all of the air out. I did replace the slave, master and the lines in and out.

Yea it sounds like the master cylinder has finally crapped out and the seal around the piston that instead of keeping fluid infront of the piston as its pushed down is allowing it back through the vent ports and pressurizing the reservoir instead. So best bet is to buy a new clutch master.

replacing the clutch master cylinder (bolted to the firewall) and the slave cylinder (bolted to the trans bellhousing), and replacing the clutch hose is the only true way to fix the issue. fixing one without the other is like a bandaid. the pics you posted of the clutch master are no doubt a common failure. the seal around the piston in the clutch master has failed and fluid will seep past the seal causing a loss in fluid and pressure. you bleed from the slave cylinder and it is not always necessary to bench bleed the clutch master. if the fluid is squirting from the vent hole on the clutch master cylinder resivour, then you have a blockage in the system and an excess of built up pressure. my guess would be that if there's not a sediment blockage, the clutch hose has collapsed internally and is blocking fluid.

When you go to bleed it again, hook up a small tube to the "pee hole" and the fluid won't squirt out all over the place, put the open end in a bottle or bag to catch the fluid.
As I mentioned in a previous entry, getting the Master is going to be a bit of a bear, especially the part under the dash. Good Luck - it's much easier if you have small hands.

the tpee hole that Father Goose is talking about is the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder, not the breather on the master cylinder cap. there are two 12mm nuts that secure the clutch master cylinder to the firewall. be patient with them. one is easy, one requires patience. you must first disconnect the master's rod from the pedal (super easy) and remove the hard line from the master. you may beed some heat around the fitting on the master to avoid twisting the hard line when removing it.
