clunky shifting

Hey, Im driving an 85 GSL. The car shifts smoothly sometimes..but alot of times it is very clunky feeling. Recently, when I engage or disengage the clutch, i can here a small thunk. I also changed out the tranny oil the other day with some redline, when I pulled the bottom plug off, it had a bunch of stuff that looked like metal scrappings on the top...Am I looking at rebuilding the tranny? new clutch? both?

Thanks in advance

I don't know the price in rebuilding a tranny, but I say it would be kind of high. If you have a limited budget I would check around for a used one. You might be able to get a good tranny for around $200.

If your tranny feels smooth I would not worry about it too much. How much metal scrapings were on the plug? When I change my fluid it will have a light coating of fillings. The bottom plug has a built in magnet that is made to trap metal and keep it from circulating through the tranny.
