choking when pressed hard

I have a 85 gs. It has the nikki carb still . When driving i press the gas pedal to the middle then it will choke but it i am easy on it or floor it then it does not choke. I have ran some carb cleaner through the gas take a couple times. I am wondering if there is anything i can do to see what is going on. I have a 400 mile drive in few days because i am moving from idaho to washington and there are some pretty long hills i would rather not chug all the way up them....

Thanks

What do mean "choke"? When I think choke on a Nikki, I'm thinking choke valve, as in when I start the car?
Are you talking about a stumble, or loss of power? When you floor it for how long? It could be a number of things....I'd look at the simple and cheap first
1. Fuel filter
2. Fuel pump
3. Old/Bad gas
4. Air cleaner/blocked intake
If not one of those....could be a number of things...needs a carb rebuild....vac leak.
I'd start with the simple stuff.

Also, would help to have a better description.

ok choking as in stumbling, jerking, lack of power.... gas is new this is like my 3rd tank i have ran through. I havent replaced any of those things ( where i live you cant work on your car its against the "rules") I do know that before i bought the car last month it sat for a year to 2 years.

Against the "rules"! Rules...Schmules! This is America....It's our God given right to work on our cars! LOL!
Forgot to tell you....look up Kentetsu's write up about seafoam in the archives. The stuff works wonders. Try running some through the gas tank and some directly into the carb.
You should be able to "Duck the Man" and sneak into any auto parts store or WalMart and find SeaFoam for about $6.50 a can

I smell a political uprising in Idaho!

Good question....
Personally, I'd run the tank out of gas, then do the SeaFoam trick. But that's just me. How does the car run otherwise? Idle? You said when you floor it, you don't get the stumble....does this hold true throughout the rpm range and throughout the gears...all the way up to top speed (safely...I must add...and within all laws which might or might not pertain to your state or province)? Has it been like this from day one (a month or so ago)? How many miles on it total? Any work done recently?
Really need more info.....otherwise we're just hitting golf ***** in the fog....

The car idles at 1250 which i was told was high, i tried to lower it but when i get around 1000 rpm the car wants to die. if the car is at 1250 and i tap the gas fast and let go it stumbles. All the gears have it if i am at the middle of the pedal. It has been like this since i owned it for about a month. On the body there are 241,XXX on the rebuild motor there are about 3,000.

I havent done any work to have to do with the fuel. I have done. Belts, hoses and stuff like that. I know i should put plugs in it and maybe wires, but i am in the process of moving so i dont really have the extra cash right now.

I used to have a 03 and it did this same thing and i replaced the plugs and wires and it fixed the problem, think maybe that could be it? I have only owned 2 cars that had carbs this being one of them. All my other ones were all FI so i am still pretty new to this carb thing.

Start by reading "How to remove a Rat's Nest" in the FAQ's at the top of this section or in the archives.

I got the guide on how to remove the rats nest that i will be doing this summer. i was just wondering if there is a way to pin point a vacuum leak that deadphoenix52 says i have... I just got done spraying some carb cleaner down the carb seemed to help a little... Maybe i will try to do the fuel filter before my trip

If it has mechanical secondaries it could be momentarily lean when they open, did the previous owner do this mod? If so sterling has a write up to modify the accelerator pump to fix this.

just look for holes. i think i read somewhere to spray carb cleaner in the holes, and if the car revs, its being used as fuel, and thats it...

but i dont know the best method. familiarize yourself with the carb and get some hose routing diagrams. and guess and check.

Start by changing the fuel filter. If that doesn't do it, then read this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...54#post3148754

Also, for setting the idle speed, Sterling has an excellent writeup on how to Tune Your Idle: www.sterlingmetalworks.com

^ 2nded. Is the stumble accompanied by a tense point in the throttle, like it's just a little bit harder to press down? If so, just means someone has done the easy mech secondaries mod.

Your idle problems could be due to a vac leak, but the original post issues are more than likely from mech secondaries.
