choke problems. .. . .

ugg.. well today i finally got the car idling beautifully.. anyone who doesnt know the story behind the car... i bought an '85 GS for $250, it has a blown transmission and it wouldnt idle when i got it...
today the choke functioned properly / i figured out how to use it...but after 2 uses of the choke, i went to crank it one last time to bask in the glory of success, and the choke just went back in when pulled out... any ideas?

The choke will only stay out when the engine is cool. after the engine warms up it'll automatically go back in VIA magnetic field. if you turn off the car while its hot, and turn it on again afterwards while it's still warm, the choke will go in cause the engine is already warm enough.

thanks

hmm..when the car starts when its hot it just dies.. it idles for ~10 seconds and flatlines,... :| any suggestions?

edit: when choked it idles at ~1800 RPM ... when hot it TRYS to idle at 800+/- 50 rpm ... is something mis-tuned on my engine? / is my engine going bad ? or is it just screwed up carb?

edit again: oh yeah, when the chokes on and the cars idling it makes nice little explosive noises in the exhaust for about 30 seconds then idles as smooth as silk, revs perfectly and everything...

do you have a service manual (FSM, Haynes, Chilton)?

try turning the idle speed screw slightly (maybe 1/4 turn) and see if that's enough. if, and ONLY IF, it starts to do funny things after you turn that screw, then you can adjust the idle mixture.

see if that works, and let us know ...

yeah man, have the haynes manual in front of me.. it seems to be idling at the right speed when it does idle, but it dies as though it runs out of fuel when its not patted if the choke is off..with the choke on, it idles from 2500 down to 1800 then down to 1000 and then it would most likely go down to 750 if i let it idle longer... note: all this is done in neutral since my transmission = dead ! :| anyway, thanks for the help..thats what i was considering earlier but i always like a second opinion since im new to this

If the screw isn't there, in the mean time you can adjust the idle by playing with the slack in the throttle cable. Not the best way, but it works. Just adjust the nuts that are on the cable.
