changing manual tranny fluid
on my 83 gsl the drain plug on the botton to drain the fluid out but how do i fill it back up? there is a plug on the side also but how do you get the fluid in? are you suposed to put the new fluid in the side? i dont know so let me know how its done. thanx

Just connect the pump to the bottle, and pump. The fluid will travel up through the plastic tube and fill the tranny. Sounds like you need to do some more reSEARCH...

yea get the pump and just pump the fluid in. then stick your finger in the hole to see where the fluid level is. you should beable to slide your finger in and tuch the fluid with out bending your finger down.
or you can just fill till it overflows. lol then you know you have enough.

If you can, go with Redline MTL - I consistently have the best performance in all my street and race cars with it.
Also, you don't have to buy a gear lube pump. Clamp a rubber hose on to the bottle and fish the hose down from the engine bay into the trans fill hole, and let gravity do the rest.

Yeah thanks for the info dudes, I was gonna post a thread about this too because everytime im doing 4500 on 4th gear and I downshift to third I hear like this grinding sound, but the tranny cacthes third and transfers power so good that the rear tires screech.

ya in 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th i have like a grinding sound too. but not in fourth. i know it is time to change tranny fluid. so i'll look into gm syncromesh thanks for the tip

Just a note that the FILLER plug (on the side) of the tranny is a tapered-type thread which does NOT need to be reamed into place when re-installing!!! If you do, it will actually spread the thread hole and is a BEAR to remove the next time (I had to pull the starter to get enough leverage and access to remove it the first time I tried!).

I picked up RedLine MT-90, that's the BEST stuff you can get for your manual tranny. I think summitracing.com has it, but don't take my word for it. I asked around locally.. Two weeks and a bit of cash later.. It takes two quarts.
Some people use a funnel and a long plastic tube. You put the tube in the fill hole, dropping it down from the engine bay with the hood open. Pour until it starts to dribble out (a partner helps this).
If you get the high-quality stuff, you won't need to change your tranny fluid for quite a while. Then again, your car probably hasn't had a fluid change on the tranny since you bought it, unless you (or the previous owner) have been taking *awesome* care of it.
