Catalytic Converter Question

Before you go insane about my post on the dreaded Catalytic converter, I need it to pass emissions. Don’t want one, would rather not have to buy one, but this is life in the big emission controlled city.

Now that that’s out of the way, will any old catalytic converter work? I’ve seen posts about mufflers toasting out due to the high temps being pumped out by a rotary, does this extra heat need to be taken into consideration if one is buying a catalytic converter? Or can a catalytic converter take the heat?

an idea....

Hey, if all you really want to do is pass emissions for a test... We might be able to work something out

I have a Bonez converter that is newly installed, and therefore easily temporarily uninstalled. You need a converter for a temporary application, and live basically down the street... See the wheels turning?

On a side note... there has been another really nice red -SE at the autoshop across from my work both days so far this week. Might be the same one we saw at the school awhile back... Anyway, let me know...

I think it's hilarious that only the MetroBoyz seem to be concerned with maintaining emissions while also trying to go faster. The lack of replies screams it I started out with a Random Technologies cat at 2 1/2". It's supposed to be fitted to a big cube V8 (Ha! There! I said it!!) so I figured it be fat and happy behind 1.1 L. It's about 12" from the collector to avoid being too close but a cat needs heat to work right, so you can't place it too far downstream trying to preserve it. I'm assuming you're running "headers." He'll abuse you and shake his head at your rice-burner but Dave at A&B Muffler on Cooper St. in Arlington has a comparable cat with a better built casing under a $100. That was a year ago anyway. I had destroyed the pole at the gas station at Matlock and Cooper and everything under the car was basically pulverized when I flew over the curb. Thus the need for a new cat when I built my current rex.

i went with the Random Technology Hi-Flow cat when i had to get my '85 GSL-SE tested. i passed the test with flying colors and it didn't have any notable effect on performance.

it's still in good shape after almost 2 years (not sure if i'll still pass the test, but it hasn't clogged or anything) just the cover came off but it almost looks better without it!

my mechanic hooked it up so that the 6-port still gets 'actuated'.

All I want is the GD sticker, some members of the Watauga police force and myself seem to be meeting more often. They've been letting me go, this last time because I had my 6-year-old daughter with me. Who broke into tears and said Daddy are we going to jail when the siren blared.

By the way MAR your have assumed incorrectly, no headers no intake, basically a bone stock (C-stock) GSL-SE.

Not a "Metroboyz", just a mild mannered salesman who drives a Ford Expedition during the week. Middle aged, wife, kid, dog, house, you know the type! Only rice I got is Uncle Ben’s……………..

Which is better? Random Tech or Bonez?

Any other makes out there? Those two are the only ones I've heard of. Or does MindTrain make cats?

Thanks, Mr. C! I may take you up on your offer!

Question, If I change the CAT, doesn't that change your class in SCCA?

I too noticed the Red -SE, very nice. It does look a lot like the one that was at the school.

Sad to hear you think middle-age and a wife means bein' one o' the boyz is no longer an option. I'm 38, married with one wife, one kid,one sheltie and two cats. Every other weekend or so, I jet out for some fun with my hombres. My wife has never had a problem with me draggin' in around 5 or 6 nor have the wives of others. Life is what you make of it. Get the cat from Dave at A & B muffler at 2726 So. Cooper ST. in Arlington, TX. since you're still stock. It'll last despite the heat and flow won't be impeded like it was with the stock cat(s). You'll also only need one. If the cat is installed right on the manifold, you'll need to put a little distance in the form of a fab'd pipe.
>Other mfg.s of "hi-po" cats include BBK and Dynomax. As to which one is best, I think they're all relatively the same. As long as the matrix is in honeycomb format and not pellet style, you're not killing the flow any worse than a pre-silencer...

As far as changing converters for SCCA... I'm sure that if you go to a high flow cat then you are supposed to run SP. At the local level no one is going to care unless you really start winning stuff. I ran CS this year with my high flow cat. If someone really wanted to pitch a fit, then let them, but I figure that my 45$ tires, and thrashed suspension more than removed any advantage the CAT would have given me.

I am not exactly sure what constitutes stock and upgraded, but I have a copy of the rulebook at home that I can look at tonight, so I'll do that and let you know.. Worst case scenario, you just hollow out you stock cats and bolt them back in place? Changing the converter was about an hour job, and 90% of that was just removing rusted bolts. right now I could probably get mine out in under 5 minutes.

If you wanna try a swaparoo job, just pick a weekend sometime and let me know...
