catalytic converter
Hi guys.
I always browse this forum, but have never actually posted. So...here I am.
I have a question about my cats. I just had them all replaced because the main cat broke inside. Turms out the pre-cats were completely clogged. Could explain my poor gas mileage, eh?
Anyhow, my question is this: while warming her up the other day, I decided to take a glance under her to check things out. I noticed the first cat glowing...with a sort of cherry red glow. I know the exhaust on the RX7's run hot...but is this normal? Should I be concerned?
Any info you might have would be most appreciated.
Thanks!
Tammie

Hi, Get it checked out soon...those converters are not cheap and the problem that caused yours to clog is probably still there. Can be caused by either an overly rich or lean air/fuel mixture. During warm up like you stated it may have been running rich causing the glowing. Did it go away after the veh warmed up? Check your air filter too. This problem seems to happen often. Do a search on "glowing cats" and you'll see a quite a few posts on this that hopefully will lead you the right direction. Keep us posted.....

Its not uncommon for some glowing to be goin' on down there. My turbo, downpipe and cat will glow dull to medium red from just regular driving. The precats should be fully punched out to prevent any furthur clogs. With a modern 3 way main cat,the precats serve no function except to link the exhaust manifold and main cat to each other. If you are able to in your area, just replace the whole mess before the main cat with a RB header. With that and a good quality main cat, youll pick up some power, lose some weight and still be smog compliant(for the sniffer test, not the visual test like in CA)
........eh,I see your in CA.In that case just make sure the precats are fully cleared out and put on a Bonez or Random Tech cat.The Bonez cats are smaller and made to handle a hot rotary. The Random Techs are universal high flow cats,so get a big one to handle all the heat and pollution.
