friendly suggestion to everyone.. keep some extra spark plugs around. they are great for stuffing in the fuel lines when doing work like this. after i got drenched in gas the first time i swaped the stock pump i moved onto bolts. but then when i was putting in the carter, i realised that spark plugs work even better. keeps you nice and dry.

carter made 2 low psi fuel pumps. for some reason, i noticed that the one with a higher # always give me problems and same problem on 4 different cars, i have been using or buying the carter with XX70 in it. In fact, i bought one recently and installed it, i was not getting enough gas. i ckd the box and that stupid salesperson, although i specifically requested XX70, he gave me the other one. i switched it and no problem since and no call back from my customers.

Yeah, mine's the "P4594" which is the 7psi one.
My plans were delayed a little tonight, and it looks like I'll be figuring this out tomorrow afternoon...
I'll let you guys know; it better be good news or I'm gonna be pissed 2 days is already way too long for my car to be offline considering I just installed a bunch of stuff and want to enjoy it (yes I'm impatient lol)... postponed my course this weekend so lots of ripping is planned...

well i cant solve the main problem but i can solve one,
go to a local shop that carries the same pump at whatever price and make sure they have afriendly return policy,
now tak your old one/broken one back,
even if its not broken at least you knwo you have one with the proper wire lengths and one that hasnt been hoked up backwards.

Tip:
When I installed my Carter fuel pump (7psi) I noticed that the quick connect plugs have no color coding. If by some reason after doing the installation the plugs get disconnected it might be hard to determine the right way of hooking up the pump if both wires are fed thru the same wire loom. What I did was to use a bit of RED GASKET maker and dab a small drop of it on the positive wire plug. This way I'll know quickly which is the positive and negative wire.

ye, in my rx-7, im running a 51 ida with the XX70 pump, holley regulator/gauge and no return line.
my rx-3 is stock 12-A with dellorto and same pump set up.
PS. i even wired it directly to the battery and got the same result. could it be factory defect since my customers and i bought parts from the same parts house who is more than likely buy pumps in bulks.

the wires are not but the pump terminals are coded + & - .

I tried running my IDA without a return line and I was also having problems with fuel pressure dropping off. At times it would go as low as 1-2psi at idle. With the return line pressure stays at a rock solid 4.5psi.

Hey lads,
Well, my problem is solved... turns out my pump was defective after all. Everything else was solid, but the pump was just not doing anything. I bought another identical one from a local shop yesterday (I'll return the fucked up one later when I get back to my house in a week or so) and this thing spews gas like crazy.
My car is running awesome now, thanks again everyone!
