Carburator rebuild kits?

I'm rebuilding my carb just to get a better idea of what's involved. I found two sources for rebuild kits --one from mazdatrix and one from black dragon. Now the black dragon one is only $24.95 for all years from 79-85. My RX7 is 83. The mazdatrix one is significantly more expensive and is listed under "12A 83 ONLY". Now the other thought I had is that the black dragon one is the gasket set alone --it is listed on the mazdatrix site as 81-85 and for $26.66. If I'm correct, then my question is what else is involved in the mazdatrix repair kit? Has anyone rebuilt their carb using parts from these websites. I've seen them listed numerous times around the this site, so if anyone could help explain the difference, that'd be great! =)

Check your local auto parts stores and see if any of them carry the GP Sorensen brand kits. I have purchased several rebuild kits from numerous locations, and the GP Sorensen kit is the best I have found anywhere. Most of the kits come with paper washers, but the GP Sorensen kits come with brass or aluminum ones like OEM. Autozone carries them for $20-25.

BTW, I had a 1983 GS for a while and the GP Sorensen kit contained everything that I needed. Not sure why Mazdatrix is listing different rebuild kits for the 1983 models. I had no problems rebuilding my 1983 carb with that kit though.

Wow, the mazdatrix one is expensive. Check your local Autozone. I picked up mine there and it was great.

+ 2 for the GP kit. Best carb rebuild kit I've ever used.

Awesome! I'll make a few calls tomorrow, but while I still have this thread open, can anybody suggest process I should take for rebuilding? Do I just replace these parts in the kit or should I clean it somehow? I've never done this before and have nobody to go to for help except this forum.

You want to completely break down the carb, and clean EVERYTHING. After it is clean, you basically put it all back together in reverse order, inserting any new gaskets and parts that came with your rebuild kit. For cleaning, you will want a can of carburetor cleaner with the little red straw, and compressed air with a squirter nozzle. A toothbrush also comes in handy. Remove all the parts and clean them with carburetor cleaner. I use the red straw to shoot cleaner into all the holes, passages, and nozzles. Then I blow them out with the air compressor to make sure they are fully clean.

The 1979-1985 carburetor manual gives a complete step by step on rebuilding the carburetor. You can download it here:

http://foxed.ca/rx7manual/manuals/ma...01979-1985.pdf

Just find the appropriate section of the manual, based on what year your car is (1983 in your case). Read through it first a couple of times so you can get an idea of what is involved. Then when you think you're ready, go to work!

Good luck!

You don't really need compressed air, I just use a toothbrush, and also degrease them first (spray can). But a compressor would make things easier :P

Are you converting to mech secondaries? If not there's a trick I've learnt to get vac secondaries opening sooner.

http://sterlingmetalworks.com/the_nikki_carburetor.htm is a really good rebuild guide, something especially important is Sterlings trick on the needles to prevent flooding
