Carb problem

I'm looking to buy a RX-7, but it has a problem with the carb. It doesn't start unless you squirt some gas right into the carb. After it is started, it runs fine according to the seller. What could cause this?

Carburetor Gamble

It could be as simple as rebuilding the carburetor, but
the gamble is yours to take. I would ask to drive it down the road for around 15 minutes and give it hell
all the way. If it starts fine after you return and you don't have any steam coming from around the intake (located under the carburetor) I would buy it. Carb kit is approximately $30.

If you buy it replace all plugs with NGK only, plug wires, oil, anti-freeze, fuel filter, and air filter before your rebuild the carburetor if it hasn't been done already.

Well, I'm going to look at the car today, if it is in as good a shape as the guy says it is, I can't go wrong for $1000 (thats canadian currency ). I don't really know too much about carbs, and driving is almost out of the question, because I really can't drive a manual (tried it on my friends ford escort and he blames his hydraulic line bursting the next week on me).

The car looks to be in good shape from the picture, but has a somewhat faded paint from what I can see. Oh well, most first gens I have seen for sale are over $2000.

Oh yeah, it has only 161 xxx KM on it. Thats something like 100 xxx-120 xxx miles, so if the car was taken care of, the engine should be in pretty good shape.

Well, I am right pissed off right now. The car is a peice of ****. It doesn't idle, mis-fires like crazy, needs a new paint job, is an automatic, needs a lot of interior work, and I think it is only worth about 400-500 dollars. The rear dif leaks, I think the trans leaks ATF, and I know the engine leaks. I think it needs a new engine.

It's just not worth it. But there's more around! Keep scraping up money and squirreling it away.
Keep searching on the net for cars in your area. You'll start to feel like an expert as read this forum and test drive your fifth one. By the time you get to the one that makes you smile, you'll have money enough to pay for it.

DON'T GIVE UP!

Ha! I am secretly trying to learn more about carbs. But you know, I have to just tear one down. I just can't do this without visuals. I can think my way through electrical but carbs stymie me every damn time. Since I a slowly looking for a 13b 4 port swap, the carb is on my thinking list. Keep on postin fellas, I'm gettin mah book larnin in.

Well carbs are not really complicated, BUT why bother doing one when Sterling can do a great job for you at a more than fair price and you know carb is tested and ok so any running problem is eleminated...or in other words if car is still not running well check ignition and for vacum leaks elsewhere......

Be careful...I thought my carb was out of adjustment and it was a apex seal that broke....make sure to check all the spark plugs good before you buy it...and yes drive it for a bit to see how it does...

Best bet is to take it to a shop and have them check it out....

Yeah..... a rotary engine shop. Most other shops wouldn't have a clue what to look for.

Carbs...

I did my first carb teardown/rebuild. The Haynes manual has just enough information to make it doable. That being said - I really don't feel comfortable with the job I did on it I'll be checking out the Carling (sorry can't stop calling them that) Carbs in a few weeks

For me its intellectual. I just want to know how they work and be able to do some simple sensible work. I know Sterling will do good work, as he has to fill the college fund for his daughter! Hey Sterling, can you get those carbs anodized red? Red should add about 10 HP to the kit.

Mmmm, yeah it would, but it would also be the most expensive damn 10 HP you ever paid for!
