Carb filter options: Pros and Cons
Alright guys I saw the sidedraft filter post below this and it sparked a question with me.
What kind of filter options do we have and what are their pros and cons over one another?
So obviously there is the stock filter housing, with either a paper or K&N style filter option. Then we have the Racing Beat option but according to them it isn't designed to properly seat any filter element except for their foam option. As of recent another filter option came to my attention, can't remember whose car I saw it on, but I picked up a spectre cone filter and fit it to the carb lip for a housing and it fits great. So what I wanna get is what everyone knows about each of these so we'll have a reference for everyone as well as any other contributions people might have for options I haven't listed yet.
I'm going to reserve the area below this and as things come up I'll update it with info I've gathered.

Back to the main question. The options are to use DCOE filter solutions, a Dell is
pretty much a clone of the Weber DCOE, so those filters should work. You just need
to make sure they are tall enough to give 1.5" clearance around the top of the
air horns. The reason a K&N won't fit has to do with the amount of space between
the mount screws on the RB filter and the edge of their covers. I would think other
makers may have this figured out better. RB probably did that to force you to use
their solution for filters, whcih they still have and will sell you.

I never noticed that before. Is that a new policy on editing or has it always been like that?
As for the rest, what does DCOE mean? Is it an abbreviation or is it just a specification of Weber carbs? I'm looking for more of a comparison of say like stock housing and a K&N filter vs say an open filter element like the specter filter I have now where it's just a cone on top of the carb.
Of course due to the lack of my ability to edit I'm finding this whole idea of mine to be stupid. Well it seemed like a great idea when I was sitting in class.

I use a K&N filter with my RB intake. I just added some washers to move the extension bolt they include up enough for the filter to fit. Bad idea though since it went from sucking air from behind the headlight to sucking in air that's been heated by the header. Planning to do something better this year.

DCOE is a carb specification.
Weber sidedrafts that are used on our cars are DCOEs
Dellorto is a revision of the weber, and theres is called a DHLA, thats what I'm referring to in my thread.
Weber=DCOE
Dellorto=DHLA
Then there is size, 40, 44, 47, 48 etc... This is how large the bore is on the carb per barrel.
The downdraft carbs common are Weber IDA's and every so often IDF's and Dellorto DRLA's
These are all two barrel carbs. Holley's are a different story.

I have a dcoe and I was wondering the same thing, I just have the air horns now. I think im going to make a custom box out of something havent decided yet and try and get some cold fresh air

Here is my K&N
Flows well but draws hot engine bay air and seems a bit slower than the blue thing at low rpm.
The other option I would go with is the CAI on the blue thing, as below
Getting you colder air, but in certain conditions the carby would be icing up much more quickly.
Ideally I would swap between the two in different seasons, running the open K&N in winter and the CAI in summer.
Flows well but draws hot engine bay air and seems a bit slower than the blue thing at low rpm.

I'm going to run a CAI in mine here soon, I'll post pics when I finish it up. Not sure if I'll use a cone filter or keep the stock blue bulk, still deciding. And check out the thread that MountainScreamer posted up there, I just read through all 3 pages and came away with some really awesome information.
