car covers

Hi-
depends on how good a cover you want, and whether it needs to be stored indoors or out. Some thoughts in my research on a cover for my 80 SA:
-tyvek covers are crap (which is why they are cheap)
-plastic or tarps will DESTROY your paint, rust your car (no breathing, moisture collects underneath)
-the $25-$40 ebay "79-96" RX7 covers are also crap. Very flimsy material that tears super easily...
So. What? Covercraft.com makes a great product in various models depending on use and environment you live in - and a nice write-up about covers in general. I bought the "Weathershield", custom fit to my RX. It was pricy: about $250 by shopping around, but considering what a paint job is worth (not to mention a UV-cooked interior!), it is money very well spent. And i must have spent almost $150 BEFORE this trying various "less expensive" covers
So cut to the chase and get the right one the first time, if you plan on having an RX7 for any length of time...
The OTHER aspect of storage/covering is the UNDER side of your car!! i note on your picture you have your car sitting outside on the dirt. If you can't store it in a garage (and even then this is good advice), be sure and park the car over a nice thick (6ml) plastic sheet!! Why? moisture! ground (and many concrete floors) constantly evaporate water, rusting your under carriage from below!! I don't sweat this for the summer driving season, but winter storage is ALWAYS on a plastic sheet!! (hint- make sure the plastic doesn't extend far enough out from the car edges to catch rain that can pool on the sheet under the car!)
good luck - nice Sparks Yellow RX7 BTW!! one-year-only rare color! whats the story behind it?? Runs? mileage? what did you pay? what are your plans??

Stu, i notice you have the leather sport's wheels on your car. that or they're painted 79-80 wheels that look close to the solar gold. great writeup!!
listen to Stu on this one. you have to be very careful where you store your car and how you are storing it. moisture is like a bad group of ants: no matter how hard you try and keep them away, they always invade when you least expect it and sometimes where you lease expect it.

Hmmm...maybe I live in an area that isn't as humid during the winter months as other places. I've been storing my car for 28 years and have never parked over a sheet of plastic. No signs of rust underneath (just a minor case of 28 year old grunge lol). I just put the cover on it, disconnect the battery, and put a smart charger on it to keep the battery topped up. I try to go out and start it periodically, but haven't been very good at doing that. So far it hasn't been a problem, since I've never had to open up the engine.
That being said, it certainly would not hurt anything to park over a sheet of plastic...would be an extra measure of protection, just in case.
Just my $0.02.

I think you want a cover that will not trap in water. If you have a Costco by you they have an awesome cover for around $50.00+. Very thick and it won't trap in moisture. As posted above the sky is the limit as far as cost, and the advice is right the better covers will no doubt protect better.

JUST DONT GET ONE FROM WALMART! I just bought the walmart "top of the line" cover and it sucks, it does its job for now but it is extremely thin material and seems like it would tear easily. The material is almost like a scott shop towel. There goes 60 bucks down the drain.

I had one on my 2nd gen years ago, it kept the sun off it but didn't do so well with precipitation. In the winter, the moisture would seep through and freeze the cover right to the paint of the car (one of those rare days when it gets above freezing), if you tried to pull it up, the cover would rip. Also, if you have a power antenna, it will poke through.
