can i put a '84 NA in my '88 NA?
hi everyone!!
i have a '88 NA w/ a blown motor, and found someone around my area selling a 13b from '84. i was wondering if you guys can give me a hand and tell me:
1) if it is going to be a straight swap. if not, what will i need to change?
2) if the 13b from '84 and '88 are the same (do they make the same power?)
that's all. thanks so much guys!!

to swap it you would need to put your front cover, oil pan, and oil pan pickup on the new motor.. then it should swap over fine..
84's i think made a little less power than the 88's (but i am donot know the numbers).

The answer is probably not. Allegedly some 1st-gen 13B's have the necessary bosses in the center housing for the FC motor mounts - FC's mount the engines via the center housing, 1st-gens mount via the front cover so they don't (or shouldn't) have the bosses in the center housing.
It will *not* be a straight swap. You'd be better off finding a FC engine to swap in, given that you have to buy an engine anyway.
The engines are not the same... completely different internally, and the intake manifolds are different as well (although they might swap over with enough work)

umm it's, possible to do it. the mounting is the bigest problem but you might be able to thread some holes for the studs. swap t eh intake manifold to the 88 one and theexhasut to the 88. swap the oil pan and pick up. you don't need to swap the front cover but you will have 4 unatractive studs stickin out of it. also you'll need to swap out the distributor for the crank angle sensor. you have to go with the 88 upper intake b/c of the secondary injectors. 84s don't have a place for them. keep the 84 lower intake manifold. swap out the sensors(IE oil preasure sender, water temp) if you don't swap front covers you'll need to custom make a linkage for the oil metering unit. you'll also need to get some custom made radiator hoses. everyting else should be ok. so if you did the swap you'd need
84 short block
84 lower intake
88 upper intake
88 exhaust
88 oil pan and pick up
88 sensors
88 injectors and fuel rails
88 crank angle sensor
custom make some studs in the intermidiate housing
custom radiator hose
and either swap the front cover or make a linkage
the 84 engine makes slightly less power due to heavier rotors, smaller DEC, smaller TB and restrictive exhaust.
you should come close to 5 hp less if you do the swap as i stated above.
i hope this helped ya and riffraff, you wernt' wrong. peejay, i'm sorry but the engiens are very similar. i've done the swap in the reverse, 88 engine in my 84. read my sig.

But as you've noted, there are differences, and it would be simpler to get an FC engine in the first place.
There is nothing that can't be done. The question is if it is worth it. It should not be that difficult to locate a similarly priced FC engine and go through a lot less hassle.
