A/C. Anything before 94 was R12 right?

Im getting an 85 next month. They guy told me the ac needs refilling. I have some r134a thrown around my house, I was wondering I could use r134a freon to refill the ac with, after I check for leaks and all that ugly stuff. I had a friend who had an 89 240 with an ac leak, he closed the leak and refilled it with 134a....now, supposelly, pre-94 ac systems came with r12 freon, and if you mix them both your compressor goes hay-wire, but he hasn't had any problems yet?, should I do the same?

you have to vacume the oil out of the a/c and replace it with r134a oil

You shouldn't mix R12 and R134. You may get by for a summer, but the R134 causes the oil used in R12 to gel - resulting in an eventual system failure. R134 is also not compatible with the old O-rings or dessicant...

If you do a little research, you can still find bottles of R12. You can actually find them on eBay. Most sellers will "require" an EPA certificate, but at least three I emailed weren't going to press the issue...

Good Luck!

It was all cars before 95. The 1994 RX-7 had R12 in it.

You really dont want to convert to r134a. R12 cools MUCH better than R134a. You just have to go to a shop to refill the r12.

I don't know how many times I heard the "A/C Works Fine, It just needs freon."

If it is out of freon it usually means that it has a leak somewhere.

We do A/C Repairs all the time at my shop and i soup up my A/C system like I soup up my car. That happens when you live in a Sub Tropical area.

Empty the A/C Compressor of all oil, flush the A/C Condensor and all lines. Replace the A/C Drier and all Orings.

This sounds crazy but it is the lateset from 4 seasons. Put 3 Oz of R12 Oil back into the compressor and then fill the system with the freon charge of the 134A compatible oil.

The theory of the oil mixing is that the R12 oil will stay in the compresor and will help keep it cool. The R12 oil will not travel with the 134A freon. The 134A oil will not mix with the R12 oil either so it stays in the comprssor.

Whatever happens in the compressor, this does work!! It lowers the compressor temp and the system cools better!
