Question Buying an FB

Buying an FB

Ok here is the deal - I am looking for FB RX-7. The FC styling turns me off and I can't afford an FD. Besides I really like the styling inside and out of the FB. I want a solid rust-free car that needs some misc work but not an engine rebuild. I'd perfer a 12A for simplicity and lower cost. I'd fix it up over the winter and add some enhancements. My plan would be fix an problem areas, upgrade exhaust, intake, and some stuff with the suspension. Maybe side draugh carbs. 130-140hp would be nice. Pretty vague at this point. I am looking at probably $1000K for the inital purchase and another $1000-1500K over the next 6 months. I am not in a big hurry to get the car so I can wait for a good deal but how to I tell a engine rebuild situation from other (cheaper) problems? I read a couple other posts and have an idea common rust spots but is there anything else to watch out for? Does this seem reasonable plan?

Thanks!
Here are some ads I can accross (cdn $):
81 Mazda RX7 GSL, black, auto, runs rough, some rust, very low mileage, $350 obo
doesn't qualify on rust part and is an auto but price is good if I need a parts car

81 Mazda RX7, new clutch, starter, alt & carb, runs well, $500 firm
sounds decent as long as its not a 4 speed

81 Mazda RX-7, 5 spd, green, rebuilt alt, good running cond, keyless entry, 200,000 kms, could use a little work, $999obo
81 Mazda RX7 , blue, good cond, $1400
a bit vague

Sounds very reasonable. Personally, if I was in your shoes, I would spend a *little* more money and get one that may already have many of the modifications you may be looking for. When it comes to rotaries, parts are 3 times what they should cost.

Also, IMO - the 84/85 cars have a much nicer and modern interior, but that's just my 02 cents.

BTW, - The parts car idea is definately a good one. I had one for while, and I am glad I did. Many guys here have a parts bitch too.
