Burnt Cap

Burnt Cap
My 7 was running kind of crappy, I could only hear one rotor firing so I checked the plugs which were fine and then I checked the cap and rotor. The cap on the contacts appeared to be melted and green. I changed the cap and rotor and it ran great, better than it ever has since I've changed the ignition and intake and exhaust. Well, I took it back out today and revs up fine but not as good as before. Kind of choppy sounding now. I pulled the cap off and the contacts had already turned white as if they were starting to burn again. I am running two MSD coils and an 81-85 style distributor with 10mm spark wires. I have heard that the MSD coils need to use .08 ohm resistor. I don't have the resistor and am wondering if that is the reason for the burning. To much electrical power running through? Any thoughts, please help. Racing beat Intake, carb, exhaust no rat nest or smog pump. Am going to be selling for $2000.00 if I can get it running straight.

That is one of my favorite parts about direct fire, you don't even need to worry about your cap and rotor because you completely bypass it. All you need is either one more msd coil or a stock one to convert to direct fire. Use the stock one on the trailing ignition if you decide to do that. Search for a writeup on dlidfis if you need to.
Do you have any engine bay shots? I've got a friend that is going to Virginia this summer he might be interested.

I hooked up the MSD and it ran the same. It has great acceleration and everything but it just dosn't sound as smooth as it did when the cap was new. Would it help any if I put some of that electro grease on the contacts.

I used this link - http://www.mazspeed.com/msd.htm
My MSD wiring book shows a different setup for the MSD though.

So are you saying you wired it up as per the instructions on the mazspeed site? I did it that way once and didn't like it either. I'm going to try the MSD again, but this time I'll use an FC leading coil instead of two seperate coils.
Does the MSD pamphlet show that you're supposed to use the white wire or something? It's better to use the green and purple (lavander?) wires on the distributor's red and green wires (green to red, purple to green). I filed the two male quick disconnects down so they'd fit into the small connectors on the distrubtor. I've never cut the wires, even with all the direct fire experiements I've done.

This is the other way I have to do it. The only problem is that I don't know where to connect the white wire. I'm guessing that the red wire went to the positive and the white wire goes to the negative. I cant get the file to attach right now due to size. email me if you want to see it. Its a scan from the MSD book. zfrederick@***.net

I was reading through the MSD wiring manual and I figured taht the way they ran with the wire was based on a stock setup. My original box that ignitor went to before the coils burned up. Thats why I run ignitor to coil to distributor now. I also compared mazspeed with thier magnetic pickup wiring. The distributor is a magnetic pickup from what I see. Correct me if I'm wrong. I would figure coming off of the distributor pickup that the red would be the positive and the green would be the negative. MSD is showing from thier box that thier red is thier positive and the violet is the negative. I would think that the red would be ot red and the green to the violet. Does this sound right to you because Mazspeed's website has the wires crossed. I'm no expert at this but I want to know what you think.

How did you wire up the later dizzy for the 1980? I have a 1980 as well and have a 1985 dizzy I have been considering using but didn't know how to wire it up. I've seen writeups for 1979 conversions but not 1980.

It's pretty much the same thing except that the ignitors are on the the distributor so you don't have to run any wires from the distributor pickup to the ignitors. All you have to do is run that same wiring setup from the ignitor to the coil and so on from thier. I'm going to try to run a dual MSD box setup so that you do not have to use your distributor anymore except for the pickups on the inside. I'm inpart doing this because I keep melting the contacts on the inside of my distributor??? I don'tt know how but it runs strong before they melt. I'm running dual MSD coils, could be the reason but I don't know. Hope this helps.

I'm sorry, I was thinking of later distributor setup. It should be the same distributor from what I know which isn't always much. If not I would recomend getting a 81-85 distributor because the ignitor are directly on the distributor so you have less inrterference with the wires. Ebay usually has or your local junk yard.
