Try lighter fluid and a lot of patience. Make sure you test that fluid on an insconpicuous part of the body to make sure it doesn't harm the paint, but it has always worked for me.

Banned. I got OWNED!!!
Don't use lighter fluid! Wal-Mart sells something called "bug off" or similar which removes adhesives and tar very, very well without any risk to plastics or paint.

It also smells like oranges, if that's any help.

there's a type of remover I don't know if they sell it in the states but it's called goof off and it works great on just about anything. I know it eats plastics but I'm not surea bout paint

Buy a heat gun or use a hair dryer and plastic razor blades w/a handle. That, along w/adhesive remover on a rag is what we use at our car dealership.
Works slickernshit. I just removed all the old adhesive on a set of side skirts this way. You can use a regular razor blade, but only if you have the hands of a surgeon.

goo gone, goof off, etc are petrolium distillates. Great for removing adhesives without doing much (if anything) to paint. Most of them also are scented that lovely orange.
Best bang for the buck.

Pretty much anything with works even a soap and water liquid might work but check first on something to make sure you don't get any discoloration or peeling of paint before putting it on your car.

I heard a pressure steam cleaner would take them off...at least that was the service they offered in '96 to remove certain bumper stickers for a certain president.
