Buddy tried to jumpstart the car backwards. Please help
A friend of mine jumped his FB a little while back and the guy had it backwards on the other end of the cables. I'm traveling up to see him next week and would like to take whatever parts I can (I have junkyards, he doesn't). He said it smoked on the driver's side, which meant the Fusible Link to me. If you get the polarity backwards, do you pop the link instantly? The key was off, so I imagine it would at least have smoked the headlight link. Any chance someone has a set near Atlanta?
I used to carry spares in my FB, but they went with the car. Now I can't think of where to find a set, if that's even the problem. I won't see the car until I get up there, so what else might be good to take with me?
Thanks guys,
Crit

This exact thing happened not too long ago. I believe all it was were the fusible links. I am not sure what else you would need. Buy fuses to replace fusible links. If you search my user name and searcg for fuse in the first gen specifis, you should get the correct thread. I posted a pic of the fuses that plug right in and replace the links.

My dad did this to a car of mine. It took out The main link and nothing else.
I have 5 or 6 of the links, I ****** them when I am at the yard. But I am in snellville. Dont know if you want to drive so far to get them. PM if you want some and I will hunt for them tonight.

I'll be in Lilburn over the weekend (picking up engagement ring) and can stop by, if that's okay. I used to have 3 or 4 sets on-hand, but gave them up when I sold the FB. You're a lifesaver, Ian. I'll PM you and we can work something out.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I can't believe people still do this. The cables are color coded and at the vary least the battery is clearly marked positive and negative. People, If you don't know what you're doing then let someone that does because at the least you get the shorted wiring and at the worst a serious explosion that can ruin someones day. Sorry, Just one of my pet peeves.

Rusty, it could happen, but it doesn't mean it will. it depends on a lot of things, as the terminals are hooked up backwards, the battery starts to heat up, it also produces a lot of gasses that are very explosive. What useually happens is the gasses catch on fire, then the battery explodes. in the case of a sealed battery, the internal gas pressure + heat causes the casing to rupture, then it explodes.
