Broken lugnut / wheel bolt.

I was bleeding the breaks and we managed to break the cap off of one of the bolts that holds a wheel on. We were using a tire iron I got at a local pull-n-pick place. I just found one that fit and bought it for a dollar. We were not using a pipe on the end.

Anyway I thought the bolts were one-piece units. It turns out there is a cap that sits on the outside end. It looks like the cap is held on by some teeth on the threaded part (and friction). The threaded piece of the bolt also gets wide (after the thread of course) which holds the tire on.

I can't really get in with a pair of vice grips or anything because the tire rim is in the way.

We got all of the bolts off but the broken one. I have some spare bolts around but I don't know how to get the one out of the rotor. (It's on the front right wheel.)

What do I need to do to get this bolt out? I suspect it's probably safe enough to drive since the bolt isn't coming out but I don't want to pay a lot to have it done.

Thanks.

PS: it's a '79 and the wheels each have 4 bolts if that makes a difference.

PPS: has this been a problem for any of you? are there one-piece replacement bolts you would recommend? I'm glad this happened at home and not on the highway with a flat tire but I don't want to deal with it again.

Cap

This is a common problem. That cap can come off at anytime. the cap does not just snap off it just comes off. You should be able to put it back on and remove the nut. If the cap split in 2
then you need to get some penetrating oil and take a stud out and spray into where the cap and stud meet. You need a vice to put the stud in and take a flat screwdriver and hit against hwere the cap and stud meet. It should remove the cap. You just put the cap back on the stud that you are trying to remove and take it out.

what if you dont have the cap to put back on? can you buy it seperately? I just bought an 85, and I noticed that one of the studs is missing the cap.
any ideas?

Thanks rx7doctor. I tried to put the cap back on the bolt. The cap spins loose around the bolt. It looks like the ridges inside the cap are striped.

I have a friend coming by today with a bolt extractor. Hopefully we will get the bolt out without too much trouble.

Well I tried drilling a hole in the center of the bolt. The extractor I had was grabing in but I couldn't get enough leverage on it to break the bolt loose.

A friend lent me this thing that looks like a socket but with a reverse thread on the inside. It's like a screw extractor but it grabs on the outside rather than the inside. I grabbed a long ratchet and finally broke the bolt loose.

I have a picture somewhere of what the tools look like. I think a set of five different sizes sells for around $25.

Thanks gang.

Oh NorthATheBorder I don't know about buying the caps anywhere.

I bought a set of 44mm Raybestos brand tire bolts. They came in a box of five for about $12 CDN. The part number is 9401B. They don't look nearly as good as the original bolts though.

Check first. You might need a longer bolt. I think 112mm was the length that some cars used.

Also someone was selling original bolts on e-bay but I found a place here that had the replacements in stock.

If the bolt still has good splines, you can take a cap off of one of your other bolts and use it.

My dad made a tool to use that works well. I am going to try and get Billy to make me a few more of them.

Basicelly we cut the spline into a peice of bar stock, it works good.

yeah i was about to say mac tools makes a really good extractor set like that, looks like a socket with grooves on the inside.
glad you were able to get it out tho. another thing i was going to suggest was you can take a nut,put it on the stud, weld it all around on the inside and then put a socket on that and presto it comes right out. i learned that when i worked at the dealership, anytime we had a bolt or something break off we called the welding guy and thats how he always got them out.
