Broken axle, suggestions

Okay, I'm breaking axleshafts. Anyone know how to get the remaining chunk of axle out of the splines?

Pull the diff out of the housing to get access.

I did this at the track a couple of years ago. I ended up going to a parts store and getting a magnet that was on the end of a metal flex hose. It wasn't long enough so I cut the handle off and used some heavy fuel hose to fit on the end of the flex shaft and got out the chunk this way. As a matter of fact, i'm looking at the busted piece right now.

Take the other axel out and use a broom stick handle to push it out. Had to do this on a 59 Impala. Way way back when.

I used a pipe to push one out from the other side on a friends Jeep one time. Worked well. Just be careful of all the little pieces that may be in the diff/axle housing now. His looked like a clean break, but it actually had a LOT of pieces floating around in there. Use a good light to look for little pieces down inside the housing tube, and if there are some, a magnet like described above works well, as does a metal coat hanger to pull them out. Good luck!

I brake shafts all the time in my 4WD. Sometimes they end up wedging themselves in there so bad that one of those little magnets on a stick just won't do it. I ended up making an 12V electromagnet remover out of a bad battery charger. It works real slick and is powerfull enough to pull most broken shafts. Another slick way I have seen guys remove them was to put a welding rod on a long stick. Stick the rod aginst the shaft and touch the ground to the axle housing for a second. 36V (3 batteries in series) are all that you need. The rod will weld itself to the axle shaft and gives you alot of pullingpower.
