Break-In Oil?

I think I'm a couple of weeks from trying to fire up the freshly rebuilt S5 13B with a Holley 650 double pumper sitting on top of a Camden 5" blower. Any suggestions for a break-in procedure? I've read a few things on the internet, but want to hear what others have done with success. What kind of oil should I use? How long should I leave it in?

Just use any old oil, it'll be fine. Change it after the initial run-up to operating temp, then again after a few hundred miles, then don't worry about it.


OTOH I never changed the oil in the P-port engine after first fire... Same with the stocker that I threw back in.

It's still sitting on a tire at work. I can't afford EFI and i definitely can't afford a Weber, and anyway I needed to make the car reasonably mobile.

The engine's coming apart anyway, there is a coolant leak from around one of the intake tubes. I think I know why, and it was an assembly error and no fault of the basic design.

30 wt

30 weight mineral oil, run up to operating temp over 30~60 minutes, change filter and oil out with good quality and change out after 600 miles of easy driving. do same again at 1600 miles from initial startup and just enjoy.

30 weight mineral oil? Is that something an auto parts store will have? I don't mean to be dumb, but when you say "change filter and oil out with good quality and change out after 600 miles" are you saying I should replace the mineral oil with a good quality motor oil? If so, what weight? I know there's always a lot of debate about motor oil, but it sounds like you've done this before so I'm interested in knowing what you use.

Sorry Rich,

I have lived over here so long that I sometimes mix up English, and Engrish or better known as "Jangrish" in Japanese terms many of the older mechanics I used to work with refered to Motor Oil, as mineral in regards to Synthetic vs regular motor oil.

So what I meant was any high quality 30 wt non-synthetic oil the first 15~30 minutes of engine start up are most critical for any engine, but even more so with the rotary. thats the time frame when the apex, side, corner, and oil control seals are initially bedding in, so its important to do it right.

fire the motor, check for leaks, fluid levels etc, let it idle for about 5~15 minutes to get temps up a little and then start rolling the throttle up to no more than 1800 rpm roll it up gently and then let it fall and in general try to vary the rpm a little from idle so that it sees a slightly wider range of operating conditions. the first 600 miles severly limit your rpms to whatever the minimum it takes to get to 50mph, and do not hammer it during this time during the next 1000 miles slowy inclrease the tempo so that at the end of 1600 miles total, youare are occasionally going 85~95 % and after 1600 it all depends upon how well you clearanced it.

The S5 T2 engine witht he 7" Camden and Holley carb that my friend and I installed in his REPU has about 2k miles on it now. My advice to him was to stay out of boost until it's broken in. As for oil, he used Castrol GTX 20W50.
