Boredom Begets the "BEST IDEA EVER"
Hey Guys,
So I was talkin' to a friend of mine about picking up another 12a that I can sandblast and rebuild without taking mine out of my car. So we start tossin' back and forth stupid things I coud say to the guys at the scrapyard to get them to give it to me for cheap. One idea that we came up with had me saying "**** man, that's such a good idea, I'll have to buy TWO 12a's just to have one to be able to do that with!"
And here it is:
Rotary Engine Keg. I know, everyone saw it coming, but nobody's done it. Take an engine that's impossible to rebuild, made with rotor housings that have been chewed up by blown apex seals etc... Remove the rotors and the shaft, and plug the exhaust holes. Of course the engine's dissambled parts would have to be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized, but you know.... Mount spouts in the leading spark plug holes and fill each housing with the brew of your choice!
You could do *so* much with this thing, it's awesome.
And I think I'd love to try it. Or see someone try it. Can you imagine showing up to a tuning session or a rotary meet with a keg made out of a 12a?
I'd probably find some way of mounting a small fridge compressor where the oil pump goes and using the water jackets as a type of fridge kinda thing... or something... a self-cooling two-section rotary keg.
So who wants to volunteer their bad housings for the cause huh?

A lot easier to cast a 'block', spin a few out using, of course, rotary molding, then paint the outside to look like an actual engine and bolt on intake, exhaust, carb, etc.

And for those who were wondering what I'd say to the guy at the junkyard that would make me think of this:
"Well I could just show up at the front desk with it and say 'The engine itself is toast, I can see the broken apex seals through the exhaust holes, and these engines are impossible to rebuild. It would cost less to buy a mazda crate engine than to rebuild it but that's okay, because I'm only buying it so that I can turn it into a keg.. so what do you say? a hundred bucks for everything, manifolds included?'"

Yeah Manntis, that would work too, but where would be the fun and authenticity of that hehe...
I s'pose if you had enough time, enough aluminum and a CNC machine you could map the external layout of a "block", cut it, hollow the inside and make a keg too... there are tons of ways to do it. I just think it'd be cool to go all authentic

I am without a doubt doing something like that. Already have a turbo inside a sandblasted 12a housing, looks kinda cool. Have lots of stuff like that laying around. sounds like fun.

god damn your gonna have to move the keg around with an engine hoist... I can picture it now.... " Hey man where's the beer." "I am waiting on my friend to get here with the engine hoist so I can get it ouf of the trunk" LOL that would be great

that coffee table is the sweetest lookin engine i have seen yet.. i love the colors.. as for the keg.. i love it... even if it has to be luged around on an engine hoist.. but think of this... leave the rotors and crank and make it into a smoothie maker.. lol...

Airflow is my life
Good idea Jon. But I think maybe fitting a mini keg into a hollowed out engine would be easier.
Jon_Valjean- that coffee table looks better then the engines in either of my cars!
Static, nah just drink till its light enough to move.

Sweet coffee table. Guessing it is a 13b though and not a 12a since it has the CAS installed though I guess for appearances on could just yank the dizzy and drop a CAS in there.
Someone posted about a fish tank made from the housings too a while back on here. That would rank right up there with fish tanks made from TV's or Mac's

These are heavier... I like the structural use of pistons. It's more artsy rather than a piece of glass sitting on top of an engine... I also like the use of the middle 4 cyls of the V8 as a wine rack.
