big fuel/carb problem
Readers,
On friday I changed my fuel filter in the workshop because the tank is rusting and the fuel filter in there was getting clogged with rust particles (tank will be changed very shortly). After I changed the filter I drove home and about one km into my journey coming up to the lights I put the clutch in to come to a complete stop and the engine started erratically idling from about 200-500 rpm
. So I instantly brought the revs up before it konked out and when I did so a slight plume of black fuel smoke showed up at the exhaust. If I brought the revs up to around 1500rpm it would hold without stalling but still run like crap, driving was often a bit jerky and started hunting for fuel if I reached around 5000rpm. Possibly idle bleed clogged? Float bowl restricted? But that doesn't really explain the black smoke I can only do something about it on monday when i go back to work but they are very bitsy and I am only a first year apprentice. Can anyone show me the light? 78 RX7 6 PORT 12A
Cheers, Steve.

That said, are you sure you got the filter in the right direction? The arrow on top is pointing the right way? I dont know if the car would even run with it going the wrong way, but its worth a shot to check.

To me those symptoms indicate flooding... god knows I experienced it enough times when I had the stock carby. Could also be a failed leading ignition or even running on one rotor. Hard to say without seeing it for yourself though. And like RMD said make sure the filter's in the right way.
