What is the best ignition system for an 84 RX-7 12a Naturally Aspirated (carb'd)

I need to know as I am planning on upgrading the engine, and the ignition is beggining to go.

I need a complete system (coils, distribtor (roto and cap) wires and the timer/computer thingy (i'm new at this)

You really need to use the search button at the bottom of the previous page for this one. There are a ton of different ways to go and everyone of them has somebody saying it's the best thing to ever happen to them...I'm personally eyeing the MSD Digital 6+ right now since I plan on running NOS in the very near future...

I'll assume it's not going to be up for a while...here's some stuff to chew on starting with the cheapest and moving on to expensive...


1) PM jeff20b for his DLFDLIS or whatever-he-calls-it setup. All that's involved is getting some spare ignitors and another coil and perhaps a universal V8 ignition wire set.


2) MSD 6AL box on leading plugs only-don't bother with the usual setup of the box as found in its instructions...go direct-fire...search the web for Yaw Power and get the directions on how to do this there. If you use the RPM limiter on this box, it must have the trailing plugs stop firing FIRST!! The neatest way to do this is to use an MSD RPM window trigger box. It will cut the power to the trailing coil (via its own chip) well before the chip you will select for use on the MSD 6AL box (which will be cutting power to the lead plugs...)...good wires will be needed here, go with Magnecors or my personal favorite (because of the thickness of the beasts and quality..) Accel (yes! Accel!) 300+ 10 MM universal plug wires with the adjustable necks for a V8...timing normally set at 20 BTC at 4000 RPM should go back to 16 BTDC if you plan on nitrous like myself.

3) MSD 6+ Digital box...same as above but you can keep the 20 degrees timing and program the box to pull timing when you hit the nitrous button,,,very slick...


4) Electromotive setup...go to their website, they have a part number for rotaries...ultimate control at ultimate cost...

i think theres also a jacobs rotary pack. but havent heard much about it.

my buddy has the pro-pak on his T2 and he loves it. He got it used, and they are expensive, but he has seen better running and better gas milage. You cannot beat that.

I have the Jacobs Energy Rotary Pack and I love it. Basically, the one reason most people go with the MSD is less money, however, the Jacobs offers other options, like ignition cutt off if some one tries to still the car, and is built in the system.

yes, that is the Jacobs Rotary Energy Pack, specifice for rotary engines. The setup was a bit pricey, but then again, I like to be different, lets say around 425.00 for the Jacobs and the high output ignition coil....

It does made a big difference on my car though....I would not go back to stock... Very emissions friendly, specially with the direct fire... excellent pickup from start...

i run the msd blaster 2 coils,
with msd wires
and used to run dual mad 6a boxes
but i sold one to get an msd6al
then ill run the 6al on the leading
and the 6a on the trailing

i would of went with jacobs but damn the price.
i'll stick with my full blown msd system

as for the dizzy ?????

i used to run jacobs wires but they were blue and i wanted red.
the only red wires i could find that had the heli core design "which is needed for the msd 6a to accomplish anything"were msd wires.

i wouldnt mix and match though because im very comfortable knowing that all my ignition components were meant to work with each other.

well kinda except my blaster 2 coils,i got the ones for stock ignition before i bought my boxes,will upgrade when i get the 6al.

yes there are 2 types of blaster 2 coils so make sure you get the proper ones.

To anyone willing to shell the bucks out for the Jacobs box (and you'd better not be running a Carter fuel pump if you do have that kinda $$$, idjit...), Rotary Performance outta Garland, TX can get them and they have daily UPS service, much as I hate that company...UPS, not RP! They have a website...look 'em up....

I'd be wary of running a rev limiter only on the leading ignition. Having only the trailing plugs firing by themselves in the nether regions of the combustion chamber is likely to cause some unpredictable results.

no im not going to set the rev limiter,
not until i get the second box,
i can only afford one at a time,and had to sell one box to get up some of the money towards the 6al

Nothing in particular except they're loud as crap...my point is that if you've got the donero for a Jacobs, then you should have no problem ponying up for a gerotor-style fuel pump like the Mallory Comp110 that is more powerful in every respect to the Carter or even Holley Red and quieter, to boot...

Just curious, but have you actually ever had a Carter. They're really not that bloody loud. You can't even hear the thing when the engines running. Alot quieter than the Holley Blue and Red with better build quality and mounting hardware to boot. Superb fuel pump.
